yeah, that's awesome. i saw a VW minibus shoot flames once, but that was because of a horrendous backfire. :)

..yet another spontaneous combustion ford. what's wrong with these guys. going all the way back to the pinto. they keep making vehicles that are death traps. or an extreme fire hazard of one sort or another.

if I knew my truck wouldn't blow up from it, I would probably leave it that way. Just for S&G

It's a small recall only effecting (affecting?) brand new trucks with some brand new diesel technologies not found on other trucks.
The battery cable recall, I could think of a dozen vehicles needing the same recall, but they haven't.

I'd still rather be in a panther chassis vehicle that gets rear-ended hard than a civic.

Well, a panther chassis vehicle with the diff cover added, anyway.

It's all a result of new emissions laws in effect for diesels. In place of a catalytic converter, the new Ford 6.4L diesel engine has a DPF or "Diesel Particulate Filter". It does a very good job of "cleaning" the exhaust. So much so, that there is virtually no odor, and no black soot inside the tail pipes. As a matter of fact, the new trucks don't even have a muffler - the DPF also quiets the exhaust. One drawback is it must be cleaned out every fourth oil change (you can open it), and must be replaced at 60,000 miles at a cost of $2500. The other drawback is the exhaust runs hot. Very hot. At times the engine computer goes into a "Regen" mode, which effectively cleans out the system and makes it run very hot. Even before the recall, there were reports of grass burning, or drywalls in garages burning.

The recall is simply a re-flash for the computer. Takes 10 minutes. The part I don't like is the computer is supposed to reduce power now when it senses excessively high exhaust temps. I'm not to sure if I like the idea of losing power when I'm towing something up a mountain.

They have to get this ironed out. There are other problems with the engine as well. It hasn't been uncommon for there to be computer reflashes for Powerstrokes. Take a 2002 model year truck - there might be a dozen flashes out already for it.

It also uses piezo-electric injection on the other end of things.

Here is a video of an '08 shooting flames out the tail pipes. In this case, it was due to a broken injector dumping fuel (hence the knocking sound). In any event, it gives you an idea of how hot the exhaust is to ignite it.

This is the last thing Ford needed.

The Diesel truck market is one of the few real money makers for Ford. After the horrid 6.0 Powerstroke I am sure even the Ford loyalist are taking a wait and see attitude.

Did Ford and Navistar ever make up? I know Ford stopped paying them and Navistar stopped shipping engines last month.

Navistar received a court order telling them they had to continue supplying engines.
