Ford P71

Does anyone own any of the P71 police interceptor cars? If so, what do you guys think of them? How well do they handle accelerate?

Also, anyone know the HP on these or any police car? I've always wondered but never got a definite answer

(I plan on getting rid of my Contour in a year or so)

I've driven one down at the Ford lot (They'll actually sell them straight to civilians if you know the package number - P71). They handle pretty nicely, accelleration is kinda sluggish though. The HP varies from year to year, the dealership should know.

If you're looking to buy one new, the Crown Vic P71 probably isn't a very good idea, they've been progressively wussing them out, plus there's the exploding gas tank problem that won't be corrected until fire surpression systems are installed in model year 2005. The Impala is likely to be a better choice. I can pull the package number if you'd like - but it's right on the GM Fleet website.

i thought it was illegal for Ford to sell a new P71 to civilians? I thought only municipal agencies could buy them new

i agree with your sluggish acceleration based upon my readings...but i also heard they accelerate fast once they are above 60mph?

impala? while it's cool, too many "gangsters" have it and would attract a lot more attention to me than a P71 would...at least in Anasleim

Maybe Contour SVT? lol

As far as I know the police versions only have a stiffer suspension and heavy duty trans and engine cooling. If you looking for a performance vehicle you are going to be disapointed however if you just want a great highway cruiser its a good buy. The fire thing is way overblown. Any car that gets hit at 70mph in the ass while sitting still is going to have problems.

Hrm, maybe I was just driving an immaculate condition used vehicle 🙂

Can't see why it'd be illegal though, the P71 package doesn't actually include any police equipment, and the only "police" identifier (The Police Interceptor badge) is freely for sale - I have one on my van. The Taxi package actually includes most of the P71 package, minus the badge.

LOL! I gotta get me one of those badges 🙂

as for the illegal bit, here's where i got it from:

http://www.used-police-cars.com/g02.html

As an individual you cannot purchase a Ford Police Interceptor P71 new from any Ford dealership. Ford is allowed to sell them only to municipal agencies as a new vehicle and not to anyone other than a municipal agency. Once the vehicle is owned by a municipal agency and then sold to a dealer, then at that time it is ok to sell to an individual that is not associated with a municipal agency.

do you think the "police interceptor" emblem would look good on this car?

also, why aren't they illegal? wouldn't it count as impersonating a cop?
AFAIK, only red and blue lights mean "cop".

I don't think you'd be able to legally paint your car to look like a police car/put POLICE on the side of the car..
(I don't know for sure, but I'd put my money on this being 'impersonation of a cop'--illegal) 😕

Name any car that can withstand getting hit from behind at 70+ mph when in park and not have the gas tank explode

How about a Marauder???

Put some cop rims on and sell the 18in Chrome factory rims and tires and you'll probably be ahead of the game

PS Fords SUX (2000)
