Lately, I think Ford is the only car manufacturer that getting into the news.

Cleveland Sues Ford Over Cop Cars

Cleveland has filed a class-action lawsuit in federal court on behalf of law enforcement agencies across Ohio that accuses Ford of selling unsafe police cars, The Associated Press reported.

The suit lists seven separate fuel tank fires in the Crown Victoria police cars during 2000 and 2001, all of which led to injuries or deaths. None of the examples, however, involved an Ohio police car.
Similar lawsuits have been filed in Texas, Arizona, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida concerning the potential for fuel tank fires in Ford-made Crown Victoria police cars, a city official said.

Ford has been trying to determine how to prevent such fires. In June, it set up two study panels to study the situation and is studying retrofitting the cars with fuel cells containing foam-filled bladders to keep fuel from leaking in a collision.

I think we need some more facts on this issue. The police cars and civilian cars are basically the same, yet no reported fuel tank fires are seen. I remember something about the police cars being hit from behind at speeds over 75 mph. Quite frankly no car is built to handle that.

Remember when the same thing was being said about Chevy 1/2 ton trucks about 5 years ago? Turned out to be a few rigged trucks tested at high speed and a lot of hype. I can't remember which tv show got nailed for that one. I think it was Dateline.

When a crown vic (or a mercury marquis) gets hit from behind at high speed there is a bracket near the fuel tank that punctures it, allowing gas to spill out onto the road where it can find an ignition source, usually from the accident itself.

The problem doesn't manifest itself in civillian cars because it takes a very large speed differential to make it happen.

I think I'll go drive my car off a cliff and then have my estate sue Honda for not making the car able to withstand a fall off of a cliff.

lame lawsuit.
Those cops should be glad that there's something of the car (and themselves) left after being rear-ended at 75mph!

?

These are police cars, not your average civilian car. There is an unmarked Crown Vic sitting in my driveway right now because my dad is a US Marshall. He does drives it at fast speeds if needed, faster than any civilian is allowed. Ford sold these as police cars, they should be that.

The Ford Crown Vic is the largest volume police car package in the USA. By the sheer amount of exposure, this does not surprise me. By their numbers of cars in service, this is probably within the odds. In a perfect world, that number should be zero instances....but then again, this is not a perfect world. Infact, this world, and especially this country, is full of litigators, who thrive on frivality, extracting as much money to their sponge type cauffers, as they can. Nope, not surpised at all about this. Welcome to the USA legal system. :|

Structurally they are the same. Police mods are specific and mostly address reliability, emergency equipment and handling. Besides, those cars are built 20 minutes from my house. My dad worked there for 20 years. Want to guess how many I have seen and/or driven? Just how much money does Ford want to spend engineering a Police car as a completely seperate vehicle from anything else it builds? It is based on the passanger car (crown vics are really grand marquis) to save money.

In a perfect world Police cars should be just that, not based on any other model.

And guess what is sitting in my driveway too: 1987 Crown Vic ex police car.

Here is something that the Police should be sueing Ford over: faulty emergency wiring in the engine compartment. We have had 2 cruisers burst into flames because of shorts in the wiring harness. One was at a Ford dealer for warrenty repair work. After speaking with some high placed friends, I have learned that there are many complaints comming in about this issue. Seems to only involve 2001 vehicles.
