First of all, I don't really need to justify why I want to by the "Big Evil Gas Guzzling SUV", but since I know it will come up here's the skinny:

-I've got a new baby on the way which brings the family up to a total of 5 so I need room for two kids + a big a$$ carseat that's still comfortable.

-I live in the middle of nowhere and haul my own trash/brush to the dump, and occasionally bring home building supplies. Since I'm trading in my truck (that gets used for truck stuff quite often). The SUV at least needs the towing capacity of a truck so I can hook a loaded 18-foot flat-bed trailer to it and still climb the hill.

-I drive down rutted out dirt roads almost daily, to get to "Grandma's" (mother-in-law's) house so ground clearance is a consideration..

-Shoud my wife and kids get in a wreck with you and your honda civic... I'd rather they be protected by a 6000 lb vehicle with full steel bumpers sitting on a REAL frame vs. a 2400 lb uni-body crackerbox!

-My truck already gets 16 MPG so I'm used to it.. I CAN afford the gas... No, I DON'T care.

-I also have a little sh*t-box Kia that I use for my 35 mile commute to and from work so it's not like I'm getting this for me... It's going to be the "Family Car/Truck Replacement" and will be used as such...

So... now that that's all out of the way... back to the original question.

Ford Expedition or Chevy Tahoe/GMC Yukon? Why?

I like the Yukon best of those. My dad had one and so did another friend and they both loved them. Never have been a big fan of the Expedition.

You know, we were actually leaning toward the Yukon(Tahoe) just because the interior seemed to be put together nicer and we both like the looks better.

I just wondered if there was any real performance/reliablity difference between the two that could heavily tip the scales one way or another..

here goes.

you have kids, so its not an issue yet, but the third row in the GM triplets isnt that great. for anyone <13 its perfect, but once you get older its to small.

the GMC Yukon has a darker wood grain than the Tahoe and it looks good though as well. they both ride amazingly, no wobbling in the wind, quiet as hell, etc.

the expedition i cant talk about, never been in a new one.

the Yukon, you can get a Denali edition, and well, you can burn some ricers no problem if you really wanted to (0-60 in 6.8s) but its costly.

also, go for it all with the LTZ model on the tahoe, its worth it.

depending on how he drives, he should get about 18 mpg with the tahoe.

I actually drive pretty conservatively. My wife on the other hand thinks she's in a Goddamn NASCAR no matter what.

I looked at the Denali edition, but I don't really see a need for the 6.0L given the price hike. I also could care less about 4x4 too. The 5.3 or 5.4(Ford) should be plenty for what I do.

Towing specs for the '07 Expedition.

Personally I think the interior goes either way. It's a matter of taste really.

That said the Expedition can tow more than the Tahoe/Yukon depending on configuration.

Expedition will probably cost less. IIRC Expedition start at 29,999.

From my standpoint I'd get the Ford because of cost and towing ability.

drive both however.

i know my dads tahoe (99) was sold with 110k miles on it in 02 to a cousin, who put about 60k more miles on it before he traded it in on a tundra (didnt need the size anymore)

Thanks! But we're pretty much looking for a used vehicle (guess I should have stated that in the OP) 1-2 years old with under 25,000 miles. Unfortunately that leaves the '07 Expedition out of the equation.

This seems like a really easy question. The GM products are far ahead of the Expedition at the moment, IMO.

Have you looked at the Sequoia?

Specs that you are looking for on the Sequoia:

Seating Capacity 8/7
Towing capacity [6] (lb.) (2WD/4WD) 6500/6200
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating ? GVWR (lb.) (2WD/4WD) 6600/6700
MPG: 4WD 15/17
Approach/departure angle (degrees) 2WD: 27/19; 4WD: 28/20

My wife simply adores her '05 Chevy Tahoe. I'm more of a Ford man myself, but I haven't been able to find any thing to complain about.

I've never driven an Expedition though...

Actually I have not just because I don't know much about them.

Updated my post with specs for you. Reason I ask is because a friend of mine purchased one over the summer and I was extremly impressed by the ride quality and features. In comparison to another friends Yukon, I would go with the Sequoia. Don't know about the Expadition.

My 'rents have 2 tahoes. They do great on fuel for being the 350, close to around 20 for the 2 door, and 17 for the 4 door. Trannies both replaced around 100k. Intakes both started puking oil, twice on each now. Door handles were cheap pot metal and broke easily on the inside that is. But i can say the motors have run well so far up to 200k. But i hate GM

How come you aren't interested in an excursion, that could tow easily and lots of room.

Thanks!

It' seems pretty comparable to the others. A little bit light on the towing capacity in but still capable enough to be a viable option for me. I'm going to have to investigate those a little further.

Based on what you have said, I would recommend the Mazda Miata. It should be able to do everything you want in some sort of way.

I love my Sequoia, I can fit the kiddies, and their crap in the back, as well as a couple of in laws. Take one for a test drive, you'll be impressed by how it handles. I've never had major issues with any of my Toyota's.
