Ford Excursion may get extended lease on life

I love how everyone attacks this truck, but no one ever complains about the Chevy/GMC Suburban. It must be cause the Excursion is really so much bigger...

At 18 mpg pulling a trailer it gets better mileage (when towing) than the V8 Explorer my dad has. Dad averages about 19 mpg without the trailer.

If you're dad's Explorer had a diesel in it like the Excursion talked about in the article, he'd be pulling 25-30MPG

True. But that's not available. My main point was that the Explorer isn't that much more fuel efficient than the diesel Excursion but the Excursion still has people saying it only gets 4 mpg. Heck, the V6 Explorers only get about 20-21 mpg running free and about 18 with a trailer. The Excursion's fuel mileage, when considered next to its size and towing ability, is really quite good.

It's not a matter of bashing extremely large SUVs, but a matter of bashing them when lone individuals are driving them through rush-hour traffic when they could be carrying 9 passengers.

In regards to attacking the Suburban, the Suburban has been around for what, 25 years? The Expedition is in the spotlight because it was just introduced a few years back - and received a lot of attention, so naturally, it is the source for a lot of finger-pointing.

Ya know...for, what, $50-60k one could go all out and get a freakin' Freightliner or Peterbilt

And what would you do with it? Drive it to work everyday? I suppose you would have the cool sounding horn going for you.

I rented an Excursion once and it got around 11 mpg. The sucker cost $100 to fill! When driving in it, it made Suburbans seem tiny in comparison. I could see the tops of Suburban roofs from the thing.
