Forcing IRQ's in Win2k Pro?

Umm.. how can, if I can, do this? In win98, i just went into safe mode and did it. What about win2k???

Here's my dilema: i had problems w/ my NIC and running a hotline server and/or sharing files. I look at the IRQ usage..

NIC
Sound
SCSI
USB

all sharing irq 11......

It's ACPI ... Windows' power management control system. I'll tell you a way to have your IRQ's back, but prepare to have some install disks ready. It won't format, but all your hardware will be rescanned and reinstalled.

Go to Control panel / System / Hardware.
Click on "Device Manager".
Double click "Computer", then right click "Advanced Configuration blablabla".
Go to Driver, then click on "update driver".
Click next.
Select "Display a list of blablabla".
Wait.
Click on "Show all hardware...".
Select Standard PC.
Now just follow the steps. After you reboot, all your hardware will be rescaned and stuff.

Some guy said that his Quake III performance doubled after this, mainly because his VGA card was sharing the same IRQ with sound/NIC/modem/usb stuff.

here's a new question: can i FORCE the use an an IRQ? I mean, i have irq 3 free cause i disabled the com... i wanna try the NIC there so it won't share w/ the video card.

But in case you didn't notice, it somewhat worked... as my cards are now more evenly spread out. THANKS A LOT!

KUK you hit the nail on the head buddy , now mine are all reassigned properly after updating 🙂

🙁 still no forced IRQ assignment for me.

But thanks for the other info, hopefully it de-shared it enough for my networking crap to run.

If you set PnP OS in your BIOS to NO, then your BIOS will assign the IRQs to all of your devices.

If you set this option to YES, then your BIOS won't do anything and let your operating system take care of everything.

Yay !!! I'm finally recognized :~) This is the second most happiest day of my life. The first most is yet to come 😉 😉 😉 😉

Oh, for the people that went through reconfiguring their systems, could you please report back with before/after performance posts. This thing is supposed to help your video achieve its full potential.

Note: I'll just like to note that, without ACPI, tour PC won't turn off automatically now, neither will it hibernate. Some people are just gonna judge themselfs if their willing to tradeoff these things for performance.

yeah, i did what kuk said, helped some, well, a lot actually 🙂

It seems to be ok now tho.

As for PNP in bios, I thought I had that as yes and still couldn't change it. I'll try again later tho.

Hmmm

I go into Device Manger -> System Devices -> Advanced Configuration and Power Interface BIOS (something like that), and go to driver details -> update driver.

Even when I tell it to show me a list of all hardware, I don't see "Standard PC." I see generic stuff, then AMD then Microsoft. Under the generic, I have ISA bus, ISA bus with VL slots, etc. etc. Under AMD I have some host bridges, and under Microsoft I have a Plug and Play Emulator...

where is "Standard PC"" at.

Oh - Win98.

I got linked to this from a thread that said that what is said in here can be applicable to Win98 too.

Even if you disable ACPI support you may still be able to have Windows power off your computer and hibernate if you enable APM. My BIOS doesn't support ACPI, but it still powers off when I shut it down and I can enable hibernate support.

Hmkay, I raised this thread from the dead, but I think there are a lot of people who asks about IRQ sharing.

Sorry Elemental for not responding to you. You made the wrong steps. Do EXACTLY as written before.

You don't go to System Devices -> Advanced Configuration and Power Interface BIOS . You should go to Computer -> ACPI PC -> Change Driver -> Select all hardware -> NOW change to Standard PC.

Elemental these are instructions for win 2k what you described is win 98 does anyone know the steps to do this with win 98?

A lot of misterious problems come up due to ACPI. It's eeeeevil 😉

I dunno about Win98 ... been a long time since I used it. Can anyone here shed some light ?
I think this thread should always be re-animated, since a lot of people asks about IRQ sharing and strange problems.

in win98, i've found i can force irq's if i disabled pci steering.. this was a while back tho.. i don't even remember if it was win98 or 95...

But I can't seem to get auto shut down to work (w/ APM enabled). Ah well. At least my NETWORK works now with my TV card... still can't capture, but i'm waiting for an AIW radeon w/ good win2k drivers.
