Forcing econo mode printing in network environment

Is there anyway to make econo or draft mode the default print setting on network printers, and force the end user to choose a higher dpi? This is for HP printers.

Thanks in advance.

Set your printer up on the server and set its defaults the way you want it, then share it out. Any clients that connect to it will now inherit those defaults. I use that to set duplexing to be automatic on some of my printers.

Note: you can also add a printer twice to maintain multiple sets of defaults under different share names. Example: I have a LaserJet 4250dtn and I have two shared printers from my print server, one automatic duplex and one standard.

We did that, but it doesn't appear to be in econo mode on one of the end users system. Should we be using HP's software or the server side of it?

If you're in a domain environment, you should be sharing the printers off of the server, not directly connecting the computers to the printer via a TCP connection. Under this model, no software will need to be installed on the client systems as drivers are loaded from the server. It's entirely possible that he modified his local settings and changed the default. You should be able to restrict this via GP as well.

That's exactly how we are doing it, not installing the printer locally, sharing the printer off the server, it's just odd that it doesn't show it as printing in econo mode on the client side.

However, it appears to be printing in economode, but we want the end user to be able to print in presentation quality if needed. Maybe this isn't possible.
