Forcing Directx paths

I have two similar setups, two AXP 2100+ w/ 2x256MB DDR333 RAM. The only difference between the two are the video cards; one is running a 9600XT and the other the most powerful GeForce2Ti card made.

When I play BF1942, I can put the same settings of detail for both, and the GF2Ti system will run FASTER than the 9600XT.

I actually see this problem happen a lot.

I've already messed around with the known sound issues of BF1942, etc., and I think it's because the directx paths the cards are taking. The GF2Ti is running a much easier path than the 9600XT. (Would that be a DX7 or DX8 for the GF2?). I hear all about forcing paths in HL2, but after searching I can't figure out how to do it for any other game, specifically BF1942.

Thanks in advance.

Every game will be different so you'll need to do some research how to force rendering paths. Usually it's done throught the console, command line or config files.

mat_dxlevel X in console

(where x = direct x level - 70 = dx7, 80=dx8 90 = dx9)

ah kewl:) they shoulda just let u select in the options menu.. bleh heh:) i might drop to dx7 just to see how uber smooth i can get it in cs source... where fps matters more then anything else:)

as for battlefiled 1942...i wasn't aware it used different paths.. it doesn't really have any advnaced effects/

That's a good idea 0roo :)

I was thinking of forcing DX8 on HL2 for my 9600XT so I can use some AA/AF, but that water is so pretty.... :(

yea i tried it. on the stress test i get 20 more fps in dx7. the graphics are so horrible that its not worth it though:p so i'm sticking with 8.1. my card isn't dx 9 anyways.
