Forcing Anti-aliasing without giving up HDR on Oblivion

You can't have this type of HDR on at the same time as AA. Presumably HDR would either end up getting turned off or you'd have some weird problems. How's the framerates at 1680x1050 w/ 4aa?

The FPS aren't bad but a little slow in some scenes with the forced 4xaa

I would recommend trying it, I'm getting HDR and AA I'm almost sure

Try turning HDR off and see if there's a difference.

You might also try getting a screen capture with and without AA forced on to see if it is actually doing anything.

I'll keep looking at it but I'm pretty sure it works.

It seems to me that it might just be programmed rather than a hardware limitation, otherwise why not let it work on ATI cards?

Yeeesh... with HDR in the outer areas even with view distance turned down I'm getting 17fps =o

Edit, nevermind had forced 16xAnistropic filtering I forgot about

30-40fps w/o it

Where and in what .ini are you forcing this? I cannot seem to find the necessary variables. Also, are they using 0 or 1 as on? I would guess 1 but I'm not sure.

I have an x2 3800 at 2.4 ghz and an x1900xt at xtx speeds and the game runs super smooth with all options enabled at 1280x1024. The load times are pretty unobtrusive as well (the 2gb of ram probably helps). I would like to manually increase the draw distance especially for the grass and vegetation since sometimes the countryside can look pretty bare at long distances. Thanks for any help!

Integer-precision HDR is available on all R3xx/NV4x+ cards (like Valve uses) but I'm not sure which kind Oblivion uses (FP16 or FX10/FX16)?

When I try to force AA+HDR it actually gives me the HDR on instead of the AA. To me the HDR is noticeably nicer looking than the bloom effect but the jagged edges around the water boundaries etc. are irritating. Maybe there will be a patch released for us x1800,x1900 users because it would really be nice to use both.

Oblivion doesn't allow HDR + AA on any card, besides the Xbox360. Something to do with the way they did the HDR (I don't think it is FP16 HDR).

Why would it not use FP blending? The only other way I could think of doing HDR is with shaders, (like Lost Coast) but that should not interfere with AA. Either way, the lack of AA + HDR option is gay, especially for a game that was hyped up beyond belief. Either the developers got lazy, or somebody paid them a chunk of cash NOT to enable AA + HDR.

I tried to force AA in CCC and when I played the dungeon area again the lighting definately looked less spectacular than before without AA so I'm guessing the game automatically turns HDR off.

hmmm...somebody... wonder who that could be?

please name a game where this is true (aside from valve games which use the shader method which also works w/ nv hardware).

Or perhaps they made a business decision and decided the increased sales for an HDR+ AA enabled game would not outweigh the cost of making it one, due to a small user base. (most of whom will buy the game anyway)

Not everything in life is a conspiracy.

no.. least i can't seem to get it to work. using the 1.4 "pre" patch (leaked beta or whatever). HDR does work, but AA options greyed out and forcing them from the console doesn't make any difference.

aside from that, there are numerious other bugs (unlimited ammo, target reticles not working using scope, etc.). and it sure is ugly w/o aa!

I played Farcry with the 1.4 patch, and HDR + AA worked. For those that cant get it to work probably dont know how the enable it correctly. I didnt mind the unlimited ammo, but it did fail to load in one level, so I went back to 1.3

Also, SS2 and AOE3 use EXR HDR with AA on the x1k cards.

Those games are probably using a FP16 format, to which the Radeon 1xxx ROPs can apply multi-sampling. I think the problem for Oblivion is that Bethesda went with a FP format supported by Xenos (360 graphics chip) that can't be AAed by the new Radeons.
