Forcing a laptop screen to default to something other than native resolution?

We have a Dell machine with XP. I set the resolution to 1280x1024, but every time I reboot it comes up at 1600x1200. Why wouldn't the settings in display properties remain?

That shouldn't happen... Sounds like driver problem to me...
What graphic processor has it got?

GeForce Go 5200. It might have to do with an admin account. I'm not really sure how they have the machine set up.

I just know it's easier for the IT people to get it to always boot at 1280x1024, then for me to start changing code to have the application display properly at any resolution.
