Last week I upgraded to vista which only sees my maximum resolution as 1280x1024; while I was on XP it would see 1600x1200. I tried using powerstrip to make my monitor to force it. My monitor is a Dell M780.

FROM DELL:
Optimal preset resolution 1024 x 768 at 75 Hz or 85 Hz
Highest preset resolution 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz
Highest addressable resolution 1600 x 1200 at 65 Hz.

Here are my powerstrip monitor settings.

Check settings (display and in device manager) to make sure Vista recognizes the monitor and the video card. If either says "generic such-and-such" you might need to uninstall / reinstall drivers or (for the monitor) download an .inf file from the manufacturer.

This does assume that the native resolution really is 1600x1200, if it is lower then Vista is just saving you from yourself :)
