How accurate is the max clock speed autodetector in coolbits? It has showed 385/1030 or thereabouts as the max stable frequencies on a 6800GT since I got the card, so I tried it at that setting just out of curiosity last night and ran a few things; 3dmark03, UT2004 and Deus Ex 2 (terribly optimized game that puts lots of pressure of the video card and generates higher gpu temps than anything else I have) all worked without any problems at all. I then tried pushing it further and further until I hit the ultra 400/1100 speed, and everything still worked fine. No artifacts or lockups at all, at least after about two hours of gameplay and some 3dmark runs. The 3dm03 score increased by 800 points or so and framerates in newer games also got a noticeable 5-10fps jump with AA/AF modes on, pretty significant considering it's only an overclock and is on a cpu-limited (AXP 3200) machine.

So is the coolbits autodetect function just very conservative or is it an indication that something might go wrong later on (especially as I have heard of it overshooting the stable mark for most people)? My 400w psu does only 15A on +12V, which could be why it was reporting such a low max speed, but despite that it still appears to works fine at 400/1100. The temperatures as reported by Rivatuner increased only by a couple degrees (max load I could get went from 77C to 79C and idle from 63C to 64C) and everything seems to be working perfectly. The one thing I have not tried is Doom 3 though, as I am waiting for the price to come down on it. Are there any plans to release a demo of this game?

Also, I can't seem to get the coolbits "fan always on" option to stay on. If I select it, click ok or apply and then go back into the control panel, it is still unchecked. How do I get this thing to stay on?

On a side note, I was having some problems two weeks ago (stock speeds), but that seems to actually be due to the molex cable going to it (I used the one that came with the card), as I was able to reproduce/fix the problem quite reliably by giving the cable very slight nudges. A quick fix involved taping a part of the cable to the 3.5" bay supports so that it would always stay in one position. Has anyone else had issues with the cables bundled with these cards?

It seems rather random actually, with a lean towards conservitive. I mean you can run the test multiple times and come up with a wide rage of results but i have yet to see it autodetect bad speeds. If you are running without problems I'd imagine you are fine, I'll bet that you could even get your card to autodetect at those settings or higher if you tried it enough times.

There are artifact testers out there. I don't believe these programs are nearly as harsh as running D3 or some other graphic intesive game for hours, but they can be a good baseline for overclocking.
