Forced to Upgrade

I was hoping to keep my AthlonXP 3200+ for at least another year but it bit the dust on Monday. So what to do?

Well I found a S939 board on Newegg that has a PCIeX16 slot and an AGP8X slot so I picked that up for about $70.00. Then I picked up a used A64 4000+ for about $80.00.

So I am back up and running for about $150.00

Nice thing is that in a year or two I will buy an FX60 dirt cheap and a PCIe video card and keep on truckin'!

Reused everything from the old system. I am a happy camper.

🙂

i can gurantee you that a year or two from now the FX60 will be considered a "crappy" cpu. Considering the new intels beat it now, if a year or two the fx will be slaughtered!

The FX60 will not be considered a "crappy" cpu in a year or two as long as it does the job that is required of it.

However, I do appreciate you uber geek 'bleedin' edge sorts helping to drop the price of my most recent CPU a 4800+ by over $300 in just the past couple of months. Bleed baby bleed. 🙂

You have missed the point.

*Sigh*

The point is, I bought a Mobo-CPU combo that I can use with everything else I have right now and in two years there will still be parts for it.

good for you, and ignore the n00b 😉

seriously, some people think that the latest and greatest is a must or its worthless. If it does what you need it to do then it is fine. Like my 3700+ is technically outdated yes, but so? It still is plenty fast for what I do, especially OC'd like it is right now 🙂

Yup. Thats how I felt with my XP3200+ It did everything I wanted it to including playing games. I bought it in 2004 and it has served me well. Had it not died for reasons unknown I would still be using it.

Trinitron, you got a hell of a deal on those parts. I am running a Clawhammer 3700+ that runs at 2.4 Ghz and 1 MB L2 cache like your 4000+. I envy you finding that CPU for 80 bucks. You will be flying through games big time with that thing. Will play games like a top of the line dual core system at the moment!

Congrats on your cheap upgrade. I just did the same with my system. I bought a Socket 754 board with PCI-Express 16x for $56.00 with $35.00 mail in rebate, and a 70 dollar 500 watt PSU with 40 dollar mail in rebate. These older CPU's are stil more than adequate for any games out.

I have afriend running a 3000+ Socket 939 in oblivion with a high end Video card, and never lags.

Congrats on your find!

Thanks man. The 4000+ was a bargain.

They are going new for about $130 bucks.

Right now my ATIx1600 Pro with 512 is more than enough for all the games even with my XP3200+ With the A64-4000+ it will be great for years.
