*Sigh*

My Great Grandmother lives in the Boston-Edison Neighborhood. There are some lovely homes (and their residents!) over there that were build back when she was a child. There's also a lot of trashy people around there too.

So, this has become an issue recently, not just in Detroit but in other states. I heard about a case in Colorado, it took nearly a year for the woman to get her home back.

The woman in this case clearly has mental issues....

After being away for a year, she said she returned to her house last week and found a woman living there. Peterson learned from neighbors she had been living there for a few months.

Peterson claims the squatter changed the locks, reworked the plumbing, replaced her appliances, put a lien on the house and even changed the curtains, and now this squatter won't leave. So now they are forced to sleep one room away from each other, Peterson with her one-year-old daughter.

The alleged squatter's name is documented all over the house as Missionary-Tracey Elaine Blair, a write-in candidate for president.

We asked Peterson whether she feels safe.

"I don't know what the capabilities are. We're afraid of her mindset of entitlement."

A squatter doesn't have a legal right to the property, but under the law the homeowner cannot remove a squatter by force. In most cases, the homeowner has to file a civil action in court, prove it's their property and evict the squatter. That is what Peterson is trying to do.

"She thinks that this is a program in Detroit to take people's homes and fix them up and then she gets to keep them," Peterson said.

As our story was going to air, we had a chance to talk to the alleged squatter. She denied that she was squatting and said she has a lease.

"I have a construction lien for the repairs that I put into the house. Someone had (broken) into the house on July the Fourth and they stripped the radiators and I made a report," she added.

"In February 2011, we had to vacate because the boiler was damaged," she continued. "I took all my books and my writings, but my (furniture was) still left in (there)."

We also asked her whether she thinks there is a program where anybody can go into Detroit, take over an abandoned house and live there.

"I'm an advocate for affordable housing. That's a part of my campaign," she said. "I've believed that since the first time I met her when I was running for state Senate (in) 2010 and she was also running for a political office, that was a part of my belief. I signed an oath pledging that I would fight for affordable homes."

Batshit Crazy.

Squatting is rampant in Detroit. You may or may not be surprised that some people who have lost their homes in the suburbs have found new 'cheap' homes like this in the City, too... My ex brother in law who ended up homeless has bounced around from house to house for well over a year now. I don't think he has ever been "kicked out" but has been forced out by other would be squatters.

lol@Detroit. Seriously, what the fuck!?!

How on god's green Earth does this even exist? In who's depraved mind did a squatter become entitled to the right to stay in someone who doesn't want them theres home? Try that shit here and just about the only thing the squatter is going to be entitled to is emergency room services.

We have a similar issue here. Budget cuts have drained the courts of resources, and criminal cases are given priority over civil cases like these. The result is it can take months before you get to see a judge over a these type of civil cases.

So how long does it take for breaking and entering to become squatting? Seems like on that alone you should be able to shoot on site.

Yea she should've shot this lady. She still should.

Better yet, we should nuke Detroit from orbit. Only way to be sure.

Not really squatters have rights in nearly every state, even those with castle doctrines.

Oh yea, I know...just last week there was a story on the news about a woman in Detroit who was selling her home. I guess she moved someplace else because she came back to her old house to check on it and there were squatters there.

She said the courts arent really helping her out with getting her house back right away. They are backlogged.

There is an entire family living in her house right now.

But anyway, this is not just a Detroit thing. This is happening all over the country. Its crazy!

Better yet, we should nuke Detroit from orbit. Only way to be sure.

Um, no.

Well, if you subscribe to the theory that property rights should not exist, as many on this board do....

Those that have should have no compulsion about sharing/giving to those that do not.

Money, goods, housing.

After all, one should not have to work for their wealth or to improve their status.

but here, we have hypocrites; want to play Robin Hood from everyone else but themselves :colbert:

Where was that?

I've lived in the worst parts of Detroit and also in Palmer Woods which is a pretty affluent area depending on what side you're on.

Detroit has its ups and downs, it depends on where you are, really. I still love the city, I was born and raised there, I know Detroit like the back of my hand. I can't really say that about any other place I've lived.

Whenever I go back, I make sure to hit up a few spots in Greektown like that Mediterranean place that sells Shwarma for like $3.00 and you get a HUGE wrap with tons of Chicken and Garlic sauce!

This is just wrong, that squatter must be kicked out of the house. People should be able to use self-defense to kick out a squatter
