force xp explorer to show details

A buddy had XP and sp2.. when he goes to explorer and views a directory its icons.
I changed it to details and checked remember each folders view settings.
Still if you look at any other folder its icons, so I unchecked remember each folders view settings.
Same thing every folder displays in icons, select details and it works but if you go to any other folder its icons.
is there a way to force the os to details and not icons?
Everything, load or save under office, everything is icons and I can't get details on anything.

No wonder he is mad LOL

Set a folder to display "Details" instead of icons, then open "Tools > Folder Options". Under the "View" tab, click "Apply to all folders".

Your buddy owes you a beer.

tried that didn't work, well it works for this folder and all its subfolders. But if you go to another folder its icons. Go back to the folder that was changed and its back to icons.
MS says to click on default settings for everything and then set it to details.
I tried that and it does the exact same thing.

This is the weirdest thing I have ever seen.

this process should work. if it doesnt, you are probably doing something wrong. i've been using "Details" in my computers and clients computers for years. has never failed for me.
