Force Unleashed demo on XBLM this week! EDIT: RELEASED!

Just as Lucas Arts promised us back in July, a new Star Wars: The Force Unleashed demo will be released to the Xbox Live Marketplace this week. More specifically, on the morning of Thursday, August 21st. Also as promised, the Force Unleashed demo will include a tutorial mode to master the Force Grip power and a complete level of gameplay set in a TIE Fighter Construction Facility where we're guessing a bunch of objects explode real good. May the force be with you (and also with you).

sounds like an endorsement

The Force Unleashed Demo is nothing less than communion for Star Wars fandom.

You can slice the experience down in a number of ways, and that assertion holds: the ritual, the reverence, and the recognition are all there. I like Star Wars, or perhaps I like the idea of Star Wars, or maybe I like the Star Wars that my mind populates the margins of the movies with. But watching Gabe play through this demo - and I am not fucking kidding you - five times, in rapid succession, the gulf between our predilections yawned.

It's crucial that we establish the parameters of this statement: I'm referring very specifically to the demo, and not some full retail product of which I have no knowledge. What I'm saying is that they have offered up a molecule of some very large ideas, and if this structure scales, genuine enthusiasm for the title is the natural and correct response. It respects enthusiasts by delivering something that takes Star Wars as seriously as they do. If there are any Gungans in this game, I assume they're only there to be cut in half.

It's a brawler where you can levitate a person, throw a lightsaber into them, push them away with the force and have your returning energy sword kill two other guys. The demo hints at weapon customization, but this element isn't exposed. The force powers turn every room into a playground, finding out what comes off, what breaks, and (thanks to their sometimes freakily believable materials system) what warps or bends. Lore fans (such as myself) will enjoy the groundwork being laid in. Everyone else will enjoy being incredibly mean to people who might not entirely deserve it.

If this game is *anything* like KOTR, but with actual playability in terms of not pressing buttons to pull off combos, then I'm down. I liked KOTR and it's sequel, just disappointed it was just press 5 buttons to pull off these combos but have no control over what happens in the action itself.

I trust the guys at Penny Arcade, they seem pretty rational and unafraid of offending a company over advertising dollars. I really hope this is the Jedi game people have been waiting decades for.

The Jedi Knight games were good, but I never really felt like I was an unstoppable one man army. Tough yes, uber-killing machine no.

Frankly I'm glad there's no multiplayer. Given the goal of the game - to be the baddest ass Jedi in the galaxy - I think balancing the game for multiplayer would ruin the single player. Leave multiplayer for first person shooters where it's mere mortals trying to kill each other. No game can do justice when it comes to an epic battle between two nearly indestructable demi-gods.

Just remember this game is going to be so awesome that it was too resource demanding to publish on the pc.

Is the demo gone from XBL? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

It won't be up on XBL or PSN until tomorrow (Thursday 8/21).

Doh. I lose track of days. Thought the 21st was already way in the past for some reason.

/still confused by that comment

Tis sarcasm, easily missed when reading text.

lol.

I know it was...i was just confused by their decision not to publish towards a PC platform, not the comment itself. My bad.

Gold only, my ass! :|

I think this is something that Microsoft will continue to do frequently with highly anticipated demos. Put it out initially only for Live Gold members and then a few days or a week later make it available to everybody else. This is one of the ways they're trying to increase the number of people subbing to Live Gold.

They've been doing this for a while now.

Just got done playing the demo for 360. Seems like a lot of fun. Teh demo is nice and long. I didn't actually finish it because I kept dying vs an AT-AT. Force throwing storm troopers into the air is fun. A lot of the stuff in the levels is destroyable/pickupable. I wasn't ever a HUGE fan of the previous star wars games, so I don't think I'll be buying this one, but I'll def. rent it. Seems like it will keep me entertained for a few hours at the least.

It's a good way to cause me to NOT go Gold(out of spite). I barely play games online on the PC where it's free, I'm not paying a monthly/yearly sub just to download demos first. I'll wait a week, thanks.
