When I surf and find something I want to Google on a page, I would like to be able to use the right-click|Search in Google option to open a new tab or window rather than just go to a new page.

Is there a way to force that behavior?

Check the plist file. I know I always go in there to change settings to force new windows into tabs, so maybe there is something for you too.

MotionMan, in the preferences for Safari (hit CMD+,) under the General Tab, at the bottom you will see 'Open links from applications' and 2 radio buttons. Click the bottom one.

That is how I have it set. For some reason that does not seem to apply to the right-click|Search in Google option (on my two different Macs, BTW).

That's weird, I just tried that and it worked just fine. Though, it may be from one of my other plugins.

Glims is a pretty nice add-on for Safari that I think will add in what you are looking for.
