Force resolutions on a 30" monitor.

Out of curiosity, I'm trying to force a higher resolution on to a dell 3007 monitor. Let's presume I've only got a single link connection and I wanted to run a 30" monitor at 1920x1200 temporarily. Now, I know this monitor won't do that on it's own. But, if I turned off scaling in the driver and could somehow force the card to pipe out a 1920x1200 signal to the monitor, would it:

a) basically show me the 1920 by 1200 pixels native and have a black space around the screen?

b) Show me nothing at all...

And, is there a tool I can use to set custom resolutions and then send those out to the monitor? The Nvidia drivers will only let me send out a 1280by800 to this monitor (1/4) resolution.

I know you could do this in XP with some downloaded tools, though I never tried it with this monitor before.

Thanks,

Assuming the driver works, if you choose no scaling you should get a 1920x1200 native image with black space all around it.

I've had very bad luck with driver-based scaling and will never buy another monitor that doesn't scale on it's own.

That's what I'd assume as well. However, I'm completely unfamiliar with any tools that will let me force that image to this monitor. I would have used Rivatuner in XP a few years ago, but I've been a bit out of touch with this stuff since then. I've got an Nvidia card and Vista 64. What can I download to give me a bit more control over my settings?

I'm pretty sure you won't get anything higher than 1280x800 with a single link DVI connection on that display regardless of what you try.

Under dual link, you can run basically any resolution you want, either 1:1 pixel scaled or set to fill the display.

I'm finding that out. There seems to be no way to override what Vista reports as "max resolution" at 1280x800. So, I can't trick it into displaying 1600by1200 or 1920by1040. Just for fun I'm going to try this with an XP machine tomorrow. Bet I can get a 1600by1200 1:1 on it.
