for you vets: a voodoo2 to enhance a voodoo3?

I have never used a voodoo2, but the story of them fascinates me, how a 12MB PCI card could boost performance on a lower-end 2d card by adding 3d functionality. I have some old 3dfx cards, a voodoo3 3500 and a voodoo5 5500, and am wondering if performance would be boosted if i added on a voodoo2, or even 2 voodoo2's?

The 2 VD2's in SLI have great throughput even to the same limits as a 3dfx 5500 but the problem with them now is Glide has gone the way of old tech and died.
You can buy a cheap card now and beat the benchmarks of the glide cards by far.

only thing left is to build a puter for the kids if you have them or Goodwill. (doorstop)

Lorne, first and foremost, SLI Voodoo2 cards are in no way as fast as the 5500 - not even close, regardless of the API.

Regarding the original question, you cannot use a PCI card in conjunction with an AGP card (your Voodoo3 3500 and V5 5500). Granted, you can use the additional card as second monitor output or something, but when it comes to gaming performance, you use one or the other.

It is possible to use a voodoo 2 with an AGP card, just for glide games. Many people used to do this with like TnT's and Voodoo2's.

Regardless, its pretty pointless unless doing it for nostalgia sake.

I may have worded my posted a bit ambiguously. When I meant "in conjunction with," I meant at the same time. You can't use a Voodoo2 to increase the performance of your Voodoo5. Of course, you can play one game with the Voodoo2 and another with your AGP card, but not at the same time.

Voodoo 3's are generally as fast as SLI'ed Voodoo 2's, I think. They also have more memory.

That makes more sense. :)

Have to agree.

No, all it did was add 3D acceleration since the 2D card had none of it to begin with. It didn't boost the 2D card's performance at all.

I have some old 3dfx cards, a voodoo3 3500 and a voodoo5 5500, and am wondering if performance would be boosted if i added on a voodoo2, or even 2 voodoo2's?
(1) You can't do that, at least not in the way you think.
(2) A Voodoo3/4/5 has full 2D and 3D acceleration, making the Voodoo2 totally worthless in such a situation.
(3) A Voodoo3/4/5 is far faster than a Voodoo2 for 3D acceleration. In fact a Voodoo3 is faster than two SLI'd Voodoo2s.

So the answer to your question is no it's not possible, nor does it make any sense at all to add a Voodoo2 to a Voodoo3 (or higher) equipped rig.

You're half right there.

Now, for us Old-School gamers who enjoy a little Carmageddon, Descent II, or other Glide-Only games, it's a different story. :p

My old setup was a GF4Ti4600 AGP as primary card for Direct3D and OpenGL, and I also have a 16MB Banshee PCI as secondary video card with Direct3D/OpenGL disabled and used it just for Glide.

The cards dead so now an extremely old skool Voodoo Graphics 4MB (Diamond Monster) is taking over Glide duties.
