For you soon to be attorneys, a question about illegal selling practices

There is a particular merchant that has an outlet store in an outlet mall. I have patronized them for the past several years, although my purchases have not been with headaches. The merchant has recently refused to sell me their merchandise. I am in California and I am wondering if anyone knows if this is illegal? I am paying the price that the products are marked, but, the vendor now wants to know what I am doing with my purchases. I quite frankly, do not think it is any of their business, as no special pricing was offered to me, etc. Now, I am esentially banned from their store. Any input is most appreciated.:|

Actually, there is nothing to require any particular merchant to sell to anyone....the merchant can choose NOT to sell to you. It's all up to that particular merchant, not the customer.

I also believe it is up to the merchant. But I'd like to hear the rest of the story. Considering that stores are in fact in the business of selling merchandise, and you are willing to buy it, why would the merchant not want to sell to you? Surely you have some idea why.

I think you got it...remember somewhere hearing that certain chemicals used in the tanning process can used for illegal drug manufacture

I am already an attorney, and I can assure you that a retailer is free to refuse to sell to you if it wishes. Frankly IF you are using the product for an illegal purpose (I have no idea and I am not accusing you of anything), consider yourself lucky they have not turned you in. Cut your losses and bolt.

As long as the customer is paying full (retail) price for the product, no merchant is going to give a damn if they're reselling it. Particularly right now, with retail sales in the toilet.

No doubt, it's something nefarious.

Several years of reselling shoes? Riiight.... I have a bridge to sell you.

Amster, you are lucky you are not in prison yet. Give it time, and you will be.

Well, Don, basically you're right, but you forgot the part about refusing to sell for discriminatory reasons. Not that it matters in this situation, but that's probably the only instance where a merchant could be compelled to sell to someone.

The story does sound odd. What are you buying and how much are you buying? Why would the merchant suspect you were doing something odd with the merchandise? Huffing shoe polish or something?
