For Windows Vista- CA antivirus- 12 month free trial

Whilest perusing a newly installed Vista ensconced on my computer, I per chance did notice a warning that my antivirus program was missing. Thereupon, I did download AVG free edition, which sadly did not work.
So I opened the Vista Security Center, and clicked upon the hyperlink which sayeth, "Click here if you want to look at some suggested programs".
Where upon I was transported to a page which had antivirus programs listed, one of which was Computer Associates Antivirus program. It boldly exclaimed, "12 month free trial!". I sayeth to myself, "This has to have a catch somewhere".
But as I investigated, it doth turn out to be true, a 12 month free trial for the antivirus program.
So I downloaded it, installed it, and it said my program would need renewing on June 30, 2007. Glad tidings filled my heart as I realized I did get something for no cost except an email address.
Computer Associates is the antivirus used by ZoneAlarm in their security suite. It is not rated very high, but some have bestowed the honor of at least being ranked higher than AVG Free Edition.
If you look on their website, I was unable to find this 12 month free trial for Windows Vista, apparently it is only through the link inside the Vista Security Center.
CA beta program list does not list it either.
CA Product Page For Home Users
does not list it either.
If nothing else at least it gives SOME protection to as yet to be seen Vista Viruses.

So far, this only works under x86, not x64.
At least that's what was up yesterday. Who knows about today's flavor?

iirc, the Windows Security Center actually gives 2 options. Both of which include a 12-month trial subscription...

I believe that to be incorrect.
The link to PC-Cillin only ran free 'till the end of October or something like that.

From About.com:
"Luckily, at press time, no real-world 64-bit viruses--as opposed to proof-of-concept creations such as W64_RUGRAT.A and W64_SHRUGGLE.A--have yet emerged." I believe this is about a month old quotation.
You may want to try Avast Home Edition, just see if it will install on 64 bit Vista,
Avast

"avast! Home/Professional now fully supports the 64-bit Windows platform. ALWIL Software is anticipating massive take-up of this platform, as Windows XP 64-Bit Edition will support up to 32 GB of RAM and 16 TB of virtual memory, enabling applications to run faster when working with large data sets. Applications can preload substantially more data into virtual memory, allowing rapid access by the 64-bit extensions of the processor. This reduces the time for loading data into virtual memory or seeking, reading, and writing to data storage devices, making applications run faster and more efficiently."

good deal, thanks for the info.
I happily used a 12 month free trial of CA anti-virus on XP last year.

OIC. I didn't know, I just went with the first option 😉 So I never clicked the 2nd link.

I wouldn't use CA even if it was free. Last time I used it, I end up reformating my hard drive and reinstalling everything. CA's customer service is worst than bb. Now, I use Avast!. It works as intended, even in Vista.

I appreciate the info and the link to Avast!
However, I have an aversion to anything connected with that dreadful .ru url extension. Besides that, Cyrillic already looks like a programing language so they already have me at a disadvantage...😀😀😀
I'm gonna try it. Thanks.

BTY, PC-cillin & eTrust both share the same lab. I believe that they also have a common holding company behind the scenes. Secrets! Secrets! Secrets!
