Being Veteran's Day in US and Remembrance Day in UK I was reminded that more military in US have been dying from suicide than battle. That might make Ted Turner happy but more people find it regrettable. Since suicides have gone up along with use of meds the meds might well be part of the problem (good number of suicides aren't active duty related).
There has been an exploration of other techniques in directions away from drugs. One blog in NYT describes "mindfullness" which "emphasizes awareness of the present moment in order to choose how to respond to thoughts, feelings and events."

An article from WND last year writes of another technique (free to military). I just fooled around with it and ended-up quitting smoking without trying and no withdrawals

I think meds lower people's inhibitions and give them a wtf attitude and they start to think of suicide more casually. I knew a girl once who started on meds right out of high school and in a few weeks she tried jumping in front of a subway. less dramatically I've know people to go on meds and all of sudden nothing it too private for them to talk about to people they just meet. I call such med influenced gabbiness "Prozac charm" - and I can tell when a client has it in five minutes
