Being Veteran's Day in US and Remembrance Day in UK I was reminded that more military in US have been dying from suicide than battle. That might make Ted Turner happy but more people find it regrettable. Since suicides have gone up along with use of meds the meds might well be part of the problem (good number of suicides aren't active duty related).

There has been an exploration of other techniques in directions away from drugs. One blog in NYT describes "mindfullness" which "emphasizes awareness of the present moment in order to choose how to respond to thoughts, feelings and events."

An article from WND last year writes of another technique (free to military). I just fooled around with it and ended-up quitting smoking without trying and no withdrawals

Coping Strategies (same group in above article with free technique)

I think meds lower people's inhibitions and give them a wtf attitude and they start to think of suicide more casually. I knew a girl once who started on meds right out of high school and in a few weeks she tried jumping in front of a subway. less dramatically I've know people to go on meds and all of sudden nothing it too private for them to talk about to people they just meet. I call such med influenced gabbiness "Prozac charm" - and I can tell when a client has it in five minutes

What the hell is that bullshit WND article? I was expecting to find half a dozen embedded links where I too could buy this CD.

The Coping Strategies CD uses self hypnosis to work. I quit smoking 3 1/2 years ago using the same method. Even though I smoked for over 30 years I can no longer visualize my self smoking or have the urge to smoke. I did not have any withdrawal symptoms either.

The Coping Strategies method actually reverses hypnosis and that's why it works for PTSD.

A shock of some kind can suspend what hypnotists call "critical factors" such as judgment and other "gatekeepers" that maintain distinctions between subconscious and conscious. Once critical awareness and protective elements are supended the door to the unconscious is opened an impressions of people, places and events rush in and get ability to drive the intellect from below. Even the body has a form of memory (conditioned reflex response) and can re-experience events as if new,

Flashbacks are actually good in that that is how trapped/suppressed impressions boil up for review before objective awareness. The problem is people tend to react emotionally to the flashbacks and that reinforces them - as does struggle against them.

If you try not to think of a pink elephant you will think of one more. If you can just calmly "observe" the pink elephant image once in the mind you will see the image breaks down on its own.

With the exercise there is no imagery - no beaches or any calm places. A person just learns to be aware of the hand each times thoughts overwhelm awareness (easy to do - we all get in low grade hypnotic states daydreaming while driving etc ). As awareness gets centered and positioned away from emotion past impressions will start to come up where they can be observed with no emotional response. That has effect of breaking the sticky psychic fibers that keep compulsive thought and emotion artifacts going.

For me smoking was like a tranquilizer. If I was upset smoking took the edge off. If I was too happy (also emotional) smoking seemed to take the edge off that. When I struggled with the smoking it got worse. By learning to observe things objectively I saw emotional root of smoking and it began to resolve itself just from the detection and reconfirmation of center. The smoking was a symptom of a problem and not the problem itself. A big part of getting better from bad habits etc is learning to be more patient. When people get upset they automatically get more thoughts that rise and these are often always negative.

Indeed, if a parent yells at a kid "you will never be any good" the kid gets upset and the suggestion gets in his head. Hif he struggles with suggestion he will make it worse. A lot of high achievers are trying to compensate for implanted ideas of inferiority. But the more they achieve compulsively from compensation the worse they feel and make suggestion take root more. This is one reason some kids described as "perfect" can end up offing themselves up. The drive to be perfect ate them up
