Was talking to some friends of mine earlier tonight...not sure how this came up but it did:

How did the the game actually know that the gun hit the duck on the TV screen?

it made a white block on the screen where the target was and the gun sensed the position of that light. It was then able to determine if you were actually aiming at that white box

Ok I sucked but it was the glare off that bulbous CRT I swear!

The gun doesn't do anything to the TV... the TV sends a beam of light INTO the gun. Hence the flash when you shoot.
