tonite, i was helping my friend's ex-gf fix her computer. her friend comes along too and starts asking me about her dead hd and stuff. so i go about my business... techy geek pc troubleshooting. then these two chicks start talking in chinese... and her friend asks her if some stuffed animal belonged to her. she answers "it belongs to him"... referring to her ex-bf, which she just broke up with. apparently, her friend didn't catch onto that... so she says in chinese "it belongs to this four eyes?" previously, i talked to her... and she knows i'm ABC... so i guess she assumed i didn't understand any chinese. well anyway... i thought it was kinda messed up. i thought we had a friendly chit-chat... guess not

heh yea, many abcs understand chinese quite well, even if they can't speak it well. its far easier to decode speech then to dredge up vocabulary and generate it on the run.

my parents friends have made that mistake they just assume...

Yeah I hate when that happens........... I also hate when someone of another ethnic back ground speaks to another person of that same background and think you don't know what they are saying. I've got a lot of East Indian friends and I can understand quite a bit of the language (I'm chinese).

Well thats what my indian girl friend says and we live in England. Her background is from Gujarat and Africa and shes Hindu. She knows more Chinese then me, not supring as I'm Cambodian.

I speak Khmer in front of my English mates not to be rude but because its faster and it comes more natural to me saying some things. It just comes out instead of English even though my English is very good.

People mistake me for Chinese and Japanese. I've had plenty of Chinese and Japanese people in London ask me for direction in their respective languages. I just say sorry I'm Cambodian.

I'm also going to pretend to speak no English and ask for directions from people when I am next about in London. Going to see how they react and how they speak to me..lol..

It's happened to me when people speak Spanish and don't realize I understand what they are saying. I'm rather white, but I'm Hispanic. I just smile knowingly and they get embarassed. Then other people assume I speak Spanish too, so it's kind of random, maybe I don't look so white

There is this Mexican food place a few blocks from my house. I took Spanish in HS and after I overheard what they were saying in Spanish about an Asian dude (me) and his burrito, I refuse to go back there again. Too bad the food is pretty good.

I went to a Chinese restuarant a few years ago with my friends in San Francisco. And you know how it is when you are a bunch of kids. We got the most awful service. They would not refill our ice water. Did not get us some steamed rice. And little things we asked for, like extra plates, chopsticks and what not took forever to arrive. So the 12 of us unanimously decided that they deserved only 3 dollars tip. While we were leaving I could hear them talking crap about leaving such a small tip for such a big table and and blah blah. I understood it all. But hey they were rude to us first. It just sucks I say. I can understand them giving bad service to kids, we kids just don't normally give good tips. I'm not saying it is right but I can understand it. But it's a cause and effect in a circle over and over again. They give bad service I give crap tips. Anyway, I just remember hearing her snide remarks as we left the restuarant. She said it quite loudly too so everyone could hear it, thinking we abc's don't know what she is saying.

i was just being nice. wasn't trying to get laid or anything. well. maybe i was. but thats besides the point!
