How much do you pay a month and what are the little extra fees that you tack onto your monthly bill? Also what are your experiences with this ISP? I'm currently using Comcast/ATTBI for the past 4 years and ever since Comcast took over, I've been having so much problems with the company. I need to find a new provider and it seems like SBC has good deals. Also I live in CA Bay Area. Thanks!

I hate SBC. I am using it right now, and its terrible. The modem decides it can disconnect me whenever the hell it feels like it. Does this every single day. I have to constantly reset the modem over and over.

Where do you live Lizzy? Also they require a 1 year contract...do they have any type of grace period? I don't want to switch ISP then find out Yahoo is worse then before.

I live in San Antonio Texas. This is the deal I had with SBC. The first year is 29.95 a month. After that year, it is 49.95, which is what I am paying right now. The reason I got DSL is because I was tired of the hang Cable had. Cable would sometimes take a long time to load a site. My DSL loaded faster, but I think it was just as bad as the Cable I had before because instead of DSL hanging, it disconnects.

Yea, I had the 2 year contract. I signed up for it I think in the Beggining of 2002. SBC did fix my problem once, but they didnt do anything about it ever again after that. I will have to give them another call about this problem. Its so irritating!

Yup, just came back. Just curious, whats wrong with Comcast?

Oh yeah, let me add something. My cousin had SBC for about 2 months, and he didnt have any problems like I did. He had his DSL from mid October 2004 till about Mid December of 2004. He liked it. I dont know why I have so many problems with SBC, but he didnt.

Been switching between promo plans for SBC DSL and Comcast HSI in the past few years. I got no problem with either one. Up time is very good. Can't complain about the speed, though I wish the upload can be a bit faster (only 256kb). There's no extra service fee for either AFAIK. But I'm think about cancelling cable cause standard plan w/o any premium channels alone is $46. WTF.

I can write a book about how bad Comcast is. I've had so many issues with them disconnecting my service FOR NO REASON. Then I would have to call them and have a tech come out a few days later to fix it which means I have a few days of down time. This didn't happen until Comcast took over ATTBI. I had WONDERFUL service from ATTBI. Also those people that answer the phones for people calling with issues are LYING BASTARDS. YES YOU TROY, YOU FREAKING LIED TO ME AND WHEN I CORRECTED YOU, YOU WERE SPEECHLESS. I'M NOT JUST ANOTHER STUPID CUSTOMER. I TESTED YOU, AND YOU FAILED. That's just two of the things out of many others.

Well back when I first got it, everything was pretty good. Now the speeds have slowed way down (dl maxes out at 85kb). I also had the problem with the modem disconnect..guess they have cheap modems or something. Called them up and had some a technician check it and we got a new one, which works.

I dont know what a good ISP would be now, but my cousin did have a good experience with SBC. He did get a different modem then mine. My modem is like a 2 year old (almost 3) modem. I am not sure if the modem is crapping out, but I will be calling SBC sometime this week to straighten this mess out. Also, looks like Baked had a good experience with SBC too. I dont know what I could recommend, because some people have problems with their current ISP, just like me and you.

lizzy,

You could try trading DSL modems with someone for a couple days and see if your problems go away. Then youll get an idea if its a bad modem. If it turns out to be a bad modem, you could get a new 1 year contract with SBC, get a free modem, and pay $29.95 a month.

i was paying 29 a month for my plan then switched to 26 a month when they had the promo last year, then i switched again to the 36 a month for the pro plan. eveything went well without any problems. ive had sbc dsl since it came out and pacbell dsl before sbc bought it out. no problems, no extra fees, same cost per month, no discconects, only thing bad was my speed which was under average but taht was becasue i live far away from one of there station thingies. I live in hayward Ca, my cousin who lives in oakland also has the same plan as me but has optimum speeds. Im satisfied with sbc since it is cheaper then comcast around my area.

I'm one of the lucky few that got there secert deal back in March. I pay total about $47/month for 6016/608, my rate will never change, nor will my contract ever expire since my account is grandfathered.

After months of trying, I've never completely deciphered the SBC/Yahoo DSL part of our business phone bill. There are discounts from the contract, but there are a number of extra little charges. They don't make it very clear.

But since you're in the Bay Area, you may be able to get RCN cable modem service. Extremely reliable, reliably fast, faster than any of my friend's DSL from any ISP, faster than my other friend's Comcast cable modem. And not particularly expensive, compared to slower DSL service. And if you get the cable/phone/data packages, you can get even better deals.

And unlike SBC/Yahoo DSL, if you have any problems, you can speak to a native English speaker. With SBC/Yahoo, if you have a problem, you have to talk to India. What makes it worse is that the better the support person's English is, the less they are able to fix the problem. The people who are actually able to fix problems are at the next level up, and generally have VERY thick accents and imperfect understanding of English. Oh, and figure on hours to fix any problem at all, judging from my experience with them. Oh, and then there's the Yahoo "privacy" policy. I'd run, not walk, away from slow expensive SBC/Yahoo DSL.

RCN Rocks!

I have SBC here in Modesto, Calif around 80+ miles dead east of the Silicon Valley. Overall except for the cost now of $49.95 I am very happy with it. I have had a few disconnect problems but no where as bad as Lizzy. Some of it was the old Router, now with the newer Linksys or Netgear I can go 2 months without it dropping and then sometimes it dumps every 2 weeks but that is rare. I can tell when it's the router of just the modem resetting. The worst problem for me is the IP changing and for $49 it would be nice of them to give me a fixed IP but they are not that nice!! I get 1.3Mbits down and 256K up.

Overall I am very pleased with SBC here. Stays up most of the time and has been quite reliable.

Lizzy, it could be your modem, seen that with other people. I have 2 Spares here, too bad you are so far away or I would loan you one.

We have Comcast here too, my friends that use it probably have more connection problems then I do and at least with the Comcast people here, they are not very helpfull or not very nice to deal with either. If you get a GOOD tech, SBC can be very helpfull but most that I have talked to were total Idiots trying to blame MY end for their Web Email not working when I can go to any other site on the net and it clearly saying it was their Emai server that was down! I freeked her out, She asked what computer and OS I was running? I told her the truth, Which one? I have 12! hahahhaha.. XP, 2k, 98, Suse Linux, Slackware Linux, Mac OSX, Mac OS9. I had her so freeked out she could not talk!

Hi Dennis, :)

I too believe my modem is bad. My cousin isnt having any of the problems I had. I havent had a disconnent problem for a little over a week, but it did disconnect today. Resetting the modem and the router made it reconnect. I may call up SBC once again if the problem persists. I like that 2Wire modem they gave me, because of its built in wireless to allow computers on wireless to connect to it. I hope if they were to send me another modem, I would get that same 2Wire modem. :)

Cable is usually faster but some say if slows down if a lot of users in a neighborhood are all on at the same time. To me 1.3MBps is not that bad. I get 160k + per second. With some cable you can get 3Mbits and 300+ K per second but for what I do this flys. Cable here costs more overall also. Don't know about your area.

Agreed. When I had cable a couple of years back, it was very fast. But many times I had the problem where it would sometimes take a very long time to completely load a web page. My DSL will have already finished loading a page, while I had to wait for cable to competely load a web page most of the time. I had this problem so much, Road Runner gave me free cable for 3 months! We then decided to ditch Cable, and go to DSL.

I had no problem with my SBC. My contract expires last month. So I disconnected. I just signed up for another year. Should be getting it this week. Hopefully it will be another trouble free year.

If any of you live in an area with Cox Cable. Its a good service.

Its a shame I live away from the city. I miss my 5Mbps connection. ;)
