For those with IT jobs...do you actually know what you're doing?

i know everything i need to for my job and then some. i work with macs but use pcs on my own. so...i know all the crap i need to to fix the machines at work and how to deal with mine and some friends. my college got me nothing as far as computer education is concerned, i did it through job experience.
however, most of the people i work with really cant do much outside of installing software, hardware and fixing the dozen or so problems that typically show up at work. its scary when i think of the people in charge of me and how little they can do.

Seems like most of my friends can't tell a PC from a MAC yet they still have decent/good jobs in IT. Im wondering just how many of you actually know 100% of what you're doing at work, and how much of it you learned at college and how much you learned on the job or by yourself.

If they cannot tell the difference between a MAC and a PC they should be shot. If they could not tell the difference between an x86 based PC and a Mac on the other hand, they are just morons, but atleast we are comparing similar pieces of equipment this time.

And I have no friggin' clue what I am doing.

I know what I'm doing...for the most part. Given a little time, I've been able to figure almost anything out. I'm actually the intern (for the second summer in a row), but I've set up more of the new servers than anyone else and do almost all the exchange admin stuff. Kind of scary when I stop and think about it, so I usually don't. 😛

Pretty much describes me...given enough time to fix or learn something, I can do it. Im employed right now in a clerical position, but 25% of the time I voluntarily do tech support for people that are having trouble with their PCs or want to learn how to do something.

I know everything that is required for my job. If it ever occurs where I am not sure of something, I consult the internet to find my answer.

I'm pretty much covered for my core responsibilities, but I usually have to learn the oddball stuff(i.e. projects, sacks of sh!t, etc) they throw at me as I go...

Only the older porn. 😀

I have (somewhere around here) all eighty-four video appearances of Tracy Lords when she was a porno star. I have some original Marilyn Chambers, some original Ginger Lynn, Annette Haven ...

I'm in the process of rendering the VHS down to DVDs & VCDs (before the tapes rot).

Gotta get some use out of all these computers....

Not exactly skills necessary for work, but AY! everyone needs a hobby....

FWIW

Scott
