for those with DSL ...

For those with DSL going into your home/apt... do you have problems with your phone lines getting either static or echoing ? I installed the filters (a hardware plug) on each plug in my house but it's not a clear tone or silence anymore. What do these filters actually do and must I use them ?

yup

When I first got DSL in an apartment of mine, I installed the filters on both phones and didn't notice any difference. The apartment complex was old and I know the wiring was probably old as well. When we installed DSL at my office, we didn't install any of the filters on the 6-7 phones we had, and didn't notice anything either.

cant do anythign for old wiring in a house other than changing them. All acting like a huge antenna picking up a crapload of noise. See if there is an appliance of some sort that is causing the noise/static. That may help. If your DSL provider is like the ones in my area...good luck tech support.

The filter keeps the high frequency DSL signal apart (20KHZ and above) from the low frequency of voice (19 KHZ and below).

Doing this essentially turns one line into two allowing DSL to work on the same pair of wires.

You cannot mix the two. If you remove the filter as soon as you pick up the phone to do voice you will lose the DSL sync signal.
