This is where I have mine.
I also don't like window grouping-- I don't need that. Is there a way to turn this off?

Ive got mine on the left, works great, although not as well if you turn off the grouping. I didnt like it at first, but its really grown on me.

I also have it on the left - Though in all honesty, I would be much happier with it if I could drag/place the Windows orb to the opposite end so it's in the lower left corner rather than at the upper left.

I also don't like the desktop to be cluttered with a lot of icons. So I enabled the Quick Launch menu, and use that for everything that would normally live on the desktop. Small icons, drag the toolbar out a little to make (4 in my case) nice neat rows, and place the quick launch bar in a group beneath the start orb. Active programs show up as bars just below the quick launch area.

A little bit of a shift, but it looks neat, works nicely, and with a widescreen monitor I gain some more vertical space.

Can you show a screenshot of how this works? 4 neat rows? I'm confused.

I still prefer it on the bottom in the end after I tried it for a bit. I still use the system menu icon in the top left corner so I often overshoot and hit the start orb instead =/
