For those who've had kidney stones....

How did you feel before you went to the doctor? Did you have occasional pangs of discomfort and pain over a several week/month period, or did it just come on strong and stay?

My ex bf had them. His back and sides started cramping, and he would throw up.
He is having some smaller ones now, so he feels sick most of the time, and when he tries to sleep they tend to settle, so it hurts the most.
Basically if you stay stationary for a period of time, they will settle and it hurts more. Not sure why.

I was just curious at the very early stages.

I've had a few instances over the last 4-5 weeks where I get a little stitch of pain for a while in my upper groin area..

You'll know if you have them. They can double you over in pain, depending on the size.

Yeah, you feel them about midway up your back. It is like someone hit you there with a baseball bat, you can't catch your breath & you pray to die.

But when you get to the ER you get some great meds for pain, first class all the way. The physician was talking to me when they pushed them in the IV, I never heard the end of the sentence. The next thing I knew it was hours later.

The kidneys have a HUGE bundle of nerves attached and so the pain is usually the worst the patient has ever felt. Usually in the back and sides like everyone else has said. If the pain is in your groin you've got other problems on your hands 🙂

my roommate has them at least once a year. He says it is a sudden feeling that someone took a knife and stabbed you in the kidney and is twisting the knife around.

Last time he had a stone his immediate response to that feeling was "FVCK, I need to go to the hospital...." then he passed out.

Scared the sh1t outta me.

drink a lot of water and stay away from sodas for the most part. People who drink a lot of sodas tend to get them. Also stay away from regularly eating any foods with high oxalate content. Many berries and the like have it.

i've heard drinking lots of milk can produce them. is this true because i love milk🙁

I dont believe this is true, but I think excess of anything is bad for you.

I'll pass.

That didn't hurt as badly as the initial stab. Though pushing a star shaped piece of calcium out of your urethra does not feel too great either.

Drink a lot of water and also eat oranges or lemon or lime. It is said the acid level in those fruit sort of help dissolve the stones. Of course it depends on how big the stones are. Water is the main key.

I've passed one.
Afterwards I was on my knees crying with blood dripping from little jim.
Easily the most pain I've ever endured.

Make sure that you're born a woman. 😀

Baring that

- Limit the amount of salty snacks and processed food you eat
- Drink a lot of water
- Limit you're intake of protein

Well, I guess I might be screwed. I drink a fair bit of pop but also go through ~100oz of water a day. Guess we shall see if it ever happens...
