For those who wish to be more informed about HIV/AIDS

In 2006 PBS aired an excellent documentary covering HIV/AIDS from it's discovery, to present times.

This documentary, called "The Age of AIDS" is available to stream online and is not only eye opening for those who think they know enough, but very educational for those who remain ignorant.

I post this because I am astonished at the level of misinformation and ignorance I see posted in threads about HIV/AIDS on this forum.

I strongly suggest watching this, even if you think you know...

I was actually doing some historical research on AIDS recently (to find its origin). I hope this documentary helps.

Crap, anyone having trouble getting the vids to load now? Watched the first few parts, now the next one won't load up!

It was a bone marrow transplant. I have no idea why the story was repackaged a month later as a "stem cell" story. Political, no doubt. Yes, technically a bone marrow transplant is a "stem cell" procedure, but it uses adult stem cells... of which there is no ban or controversy.

At any rate, it's not a viable cure for the vast majority. FAR too dangerous and expensive. The death rate would be higher than current antiretroviral treatment.

However, it shows that if we could change these cells through gene therapy, we may well have a cure.

Cures only White people eh? I guess they've finally perfected their man-made disease, and the Germans can finally realize their wish for a pure world.

Do you suggest watching this simply because it is educational or to encourage us to be more active in fighting against the disease? I'm pretty sure most folks already understand how to avoid catching HIV/AIDS.

I try really hard to be concerned about my fellow man and his welfare, but there comes a point where I can only muster up so much compassion. HIV/AIDS became much less of a concern for me when I realized that I'll probably never, ever become infected since I engage in none of the behaviors that would put me at risk.

I now rank the problem of HIV/AIDS right up there with starving African children and third-world sweat shops. If I could resolve these issues with the wave of a magic wand I would, but since there are no simple resolution to these problems I spend my energies on improving the lives of my family instead.

Actually, many here don't know how it's transmitted as evidenced by some very ignorant posts about it. And if you're heterosexual and sexually active you are at risk. Sorry, but it's true. Even if you are monogamous, your wife/husband may not be. Yes, you can pull all the stats showing how heterosexual F2M transmissions are so rare... but that doesn't matter much anymore to those who catch it that way. And in my time working with PWAs I've met quite a few HIV+ men who's only risk factor was being heterosexually active.

Why not just watch it? You may learn something.

Frontline makes excellent documentaries on various subjects. I'd highly recommend Tivoing the series as they're shown on tv.
