For those who nef at work

Is it ethical? Do people ever get fired if they frequent an Off Topic forum? I visit Off Topic like once a day from work and I get pretty paranoid sometimes. We do use Websense but it only blocks myspace, pr0n, web mail, and mp3/game sites.

As long as you get your work done and don't bother the rest of the office, it seems ethical to me.

yes, yes it is

i work a crap load of overtime on salary, so over the course of the entire year, it all balances out. our business is very cyclical (on an annual basis)

i "add value" to the corp. to a level commensurate with my annual salary, so neffing is irrelevant

we have tri-cubes, i share the tri-cube with my boss and a co-worker that i most closely collaborate with, so if anything needs to be done, i am sitting right there and can get onto it

My apps are web-based, so I do a lot of alt-tabbing. I also sit in the same cubicle as the Tech Support Analyst and she knows how much I'm on the internet for non-work stuff. When she does audits on internet use, I frequently ask her, "so when are you bustin' me?" 😛

This site used to be blocked by Websense. They unblocked it, much to the chagrin of the AT mods 😛 ehehehhehe j/k

My posting here does not affect the quality of my work. The quantity I can get done is similar to those in my department. If I stopped posting, I'd just blow everyone away and it would be bad for all parties.

When I first started coming here from work, I told my manager that I helped people with computer problems on a tech forum (I used to post in TS quite a bit). She said it was cool. Now, I have no local manager... he works 8 hours away in Ottawa. I'm doing some good work on a project for him at the moment, and I think I am the least of his worries, having trained several employees from neighbouring departments on how to maintain my work functions when I return to my old base.

Cliffs: it may or may not be unethical based on your situation and your workplace.

You could always say you were posting in the software forum for help on something work related. Assuming you're a software engineer, and it seems everyone is a software engineer these days.

My company doesn't seem to give a crap. As long as you get your work done and aren't hogging bandwidth it's fine. I have days where I am really busy and times when I am not overly taxed so I can spend more time neffing. It all balances out and I do good work, in fact, I'm getting a promotion in the next couple weeks for a software implementation project I headed that went very smoothly.
