Damn! How do they offer it so low?

How did you know that NEC's are this company's re-branded?

only thing bad is they only have a 13" lcd and it is a no name brand. But then again sony products are name brand and quality wise suck it hardcore. Big POS. In laptops i personally will only buy 2 brands IBM or Toshiba, Prefer IBM though!

No just Sony Laptops in general. The failure rates on them are really High. IBM Thinkpads rock! I love my T20 and A20! 2 day turn around time if it dies.

I am sayin that sony products flat out suck. Sony has a great R & D Department with lots of innovative products. But the problem is that Quality of manufacturing Sucks, They try to live off of their name that they once had. HP also does this & intel is starting to do it. Produce crap put their name on it and it sells. Sad but true. Out of all TV's made the ones with the most problems is the Wega's by sony. Agreat Idea nice looking but Quality is just not there. SOny comps also are overpriced and have lots of probs.

i'm personally a big fan of the sony vaio's, i don't know why so many people have had problems with it. i've used them before quite a bit, and finally decided to pop for my own to set me up for the university life. i have friends who've had theirs for quite a while now with no failures. however i'm mainly interested in the slick models and thin/weight design of them. i never really cared for thinkpads, but i haven't used any of the newer ones so i won't say anything about that. i'm sure ibm and toshiba's are awesome, but i've always pictured them bulkier for that power. i look for strength and extreme mobility in a notebook, guess that's why the vaio's appeal to me. however i believe toshiba does have a line out that's thinner/lighter then the vaios ? i dunno, but if the PRICE is right, i think that's all that really matters =)

i recently got a great deal on a sony xg29, i can't wait for that to come in =) we'll see if it lasts the few years i need it to ;P

capping off on the last comment, i'd never buy a Sony Desktop or other computer product for that matter. everything else from sony i've seen has been pure crap, but then again so are all other propriortory brands. if i never see a Pavilion again i'll die a happy man. too bad the mobile market isn't as competitive as the desktop, i want to build my own =D

as far as laptops are concerned i wouldn't go with a name you haven't heard of. support will be down, and you won't have much luck trying to find help from others. i don't know about components, but they can't be quite top of the line either. =D

as tempting as prices may be, you'll kick yourself for throwing that cash away when your daily BSOD starts calling

I got to agree with zero on this one go with a name that you are familiar with and know makes a good laptop! The reason i say this is because if you ever have any problems( because of the nature of a laptop & its size it is waaaaayyyy more suseptable to damage)you will need a damn good warantee and a company that will back it! that is another reason i like ibm. About 2 years ago i had a thinkpad It was a great machine until one day i went to start the sucker up and it would not start (like it had no power or somthin) anyway i called IBM they had fedex come by my buisness with a special box and prepaid label that same day! anyway 2 days later it showed up at 10:30 in the morning working again! (one of the chips that controlls the power had died)My point is that a warrantee is worth alot, so you get what you pay for in the end!

With name brand laptops basically what you're paying for is the service. The quality doesn't differ that much but service does.

But through my experience working for a reseller, sometimes even the top tier brands such as IBM and Toshiba can still screw up once in a while, especially with their international warranty coverage.

So basically, just look for one best suited to your needs. Read the products and manufacturers reviews prior to the purchase.

Let me share my latest nightmare:

Toshiba 3015 dies (1 year old), call company that handles extended service contract, takes 5 calls, 2 sets of faxes to prove to them I have a contract with them.

Drop off beloved notebook @ Radio Shack (?) as instructed.

3 weeks later, determine that no-one knows where the hell it is.

Radio Shack told me that tomorrow they'll make a determination & decide what they'll do.

Should have known I was doomed when instructed to take it to Radio Shack.

when shopping for laptops, customer service and warrenty are _really_ big things you want to look for. a laptop from an untrustworthy (by untrustworthy, i mean one who doesn't already have a strong, set reputation) company may be cheap and light on the wallet now, but in cases like these you get what you pay for. in the end you'll wish you'd have chipped in the extra couple extra for the good stuff.

laptops are unique because the company you buy it from is who you're going to be dealing with when it breaks. i say when becasue i can almost garauntee you that one faithful day when you've got to turn in your report, you'll be facing a black screen. i don't think i'm alone when i say you can't expect your 700mhz machine packed into a flat slim design to NOT eventually have a piece shaken wrong somewhere, with as much care as you give it ;)

anyway, my original point is that the longer/better the warrenty the greater the chances you'll have a smaller headache. another reason ibms are so popular, you know they're not gonna gone before the warrenty runs out =D

speaking of which, with all the people here that've bitched about vaio's, how has sony's support been? i've never had a vaio problem and needed to contact sony so i can't say i have any first hand experience or even by ear. i just got a xg29 so i'd be interested in some reviews, i can only assume they're somewhat decent or reliable. at least more reliable then radioshack i'm sure =)

i still can't help but chuckle at that one, sorry man ;)

Recommended laptop brands based on reviews, knowing owners of these brands and personal experiences.

Dell
Gateway
IBM
Toshiba

Unfortunately I don't know that many people who own SONY laptops to gauge a worthwhile opinion, I'll admit their R&D department is probably one of the best in the world however build quality, product longetivity, support and warranty are just as important as "looks awesome, super thin, blah blah blah" if not more important.

Personally if I had to buy a Dell and wanted the most bang for my buck and quality I'd buy Dell and IBM ThinkPad first before considering anything else.

Don't forget right now Dell is offering $100 off their Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop until 9/30. E-mail me for the link to the coupon since I'll probably be publically stoned by the mods for posting a legit URL.

PliableMoose - you may have just gotten a hot deal. A trade in the old one for a new one and compensation for time, misery, and aggravation :)
