For those who live in NY/NJ...

My friends and I want to go on a summer trip in mid-July.

So far we like the idea of traveling north to the New Jersey/New York area.

We want to see a Yankee game (Only because St. Louis is too far away to drive 😉) but we also kind of want to have a beach nearby.

Can someone tell me some good recreational beaches in New York? If i can get some good beaches, it will be infinitely easier for me to find some Beach house or Condo or Large hotel for us.

Thanks,
-Kevin

robert moses all the way in to fire island are very nice. jones beach is way too overcrowded.
along the jersey shores there are some, but im not too familiar with those

my favorite jersey shore is long beach island but i believe their hotel rates are really expensive...

edit: other favorite beach is seaside heights.

Thank you for all the suggestions.

We are about a 7 person group, so as long as there are 2 beds and some floor space we are fine. Since this is a vacation we will obviously need a small kitchen area in our hotel. Nothing fancy.

Based on all of that would it be better financially for me to look at the New Jersey Shore beaches, or stick to the beaches in NY?

Jersey might be cheaper, if you dont mind the hotel being a few miles away from the beaches.
Check hotwire for cheaper rates, whenever i travel to another metro area i check their site, yes you dont know which hotel you're going until you paid and theres no refund but most of the time i get much better rates and very very decent hotels.

if you go by the long beach jersey shore area it is still a hour or more drive back into NYC with normal traffic.

Ok to give you an idea of what we are looking for go here

Not a hotel, but not a beach house, just sort of a place to rent. We want to keep it around $400 for the week, and we only need like 1 bedroom (As long as there is sufficient floor space and a kitchen). Ive been searching but most of it is really expensive, and i dont know quite what to search for (ie: Is it a beach house, is it a Condo)

Seaside Heights is probably cheaper, and it has a boardwalk which is cool... arcades and whatnot.

Well we are driving from Northern VA (Fredericksburg).

We want to go to New York twice out of the week or so that we stay there. Once to see a Yankee's game, and another time just to walk around and have fun. Is it far enough that gas will kill us driving up and back twice from long beach? If so would you recommend any other beaches with accomodations like this only a little cheaper and smaller.

I'd hate to drive and park in NYC so I usually take the train. Train tickets are expensive, but so are tolls and parking. Although if you fit everyone in one vehicle, tolls and parking is probably cheaper.

Edit: I don't know if there's a line that runs from Newark/NYC down the shore though.

Well if there isn't any need for a 4x4 vehicle (We went Off Roading in the outer banks (SO FUN!!!!!)) Then 2 cars would probably be just fine. But we wouldn't be able to fit in one.

Well there's no place to go off-roading on LBI, but the Pine Barrens aren't too far away. Just watch out for the Jersey Devil. I don't know how much you'll be looking at for tolls to get from LBI to the Bronx or from LBI to Manhattan, nor do I know how much parking is. I do know parking is pretty darned expensive in Manhattan though. I don't think the train is really an option though unless you drive up to Newark or Hoboken and park there. Which may not be a bad idea actually, the train will probably cost less there than you'd spend on parking and tolls.
