For those who have played / beat Uncharted 2

I got the game due to the hype for Uncharted 3 (and the youtube videos for Uncharted 3 looked badass) and reading everywhere that Uncharted 2 was the best in the series so far, but after opening and playing the game I'm a bit disappointed.

I'm not terribly far in (Act 4 I believe) but at this point I'm playing the game merely for the story which is in fact very good. The controls are really what get to me the most.

I'm at the point where you take over the base in the jungle and now I'm in a firefight, and if it wasn't for the fact I want to know what happens next, I'd just turn the game off and sell it.

Is there a light at the end of this tunnel? Or if I'm already this upset with the game, should I just let it go and move on? Also, should I return Uncharted 3?

I'm really hoping it gets better after all the great things I've read.

Thanks.

Different strokes for different folks.

I thought 2 was easily an improvement over 1 but I enjoyed both of them from start to finish. Granted there were moments where I got stuck for awhile trying to get past a bad timing/controls issue but the story was well done and overall the game itself was fun to play.

Sometimes the angles were screwy though.

As a aside, just like movies, it's ALWAYS (IMO) better going into something thinking it won't live up to the hype. Rarely when something is highly hyped up and I've bought into it has it actually lived up. It's always so much better going into something and ignoring/doubting the hype and being pleasantly surprised.

The game was really fun, but the controls are too loose for me. I even got Uncharted 3, but that is the main problem I have with the game. The combat is horrible because of how loose the controls are.

I think part of the problem is I'm coming into this game while coming out of Batman Arkham Asylum, which aside from the boss fights was an excellent game and had minor control issues. Overall I believe it to be a much better game.

UC 2 and UC3 are both slower to develop than the original. With that said, the controls never change so that's a matter your ability to adapt.

The controls are standard for TPS, if you can't get the hang of it then how will you play any game? Just keep playing and learn the system, your brain will catch on and the controls will become second nature.

It's not that I don't understand the controls or can't perform them, I just don't think they're smooth or well done.

I was asking simply because I'm wondering if it is worth sticking out the annoyances.

Uncharted 2 is my favorite in the series.

It's interesting because I went into Uncharted 3 after playing Arkham City, so I totally get what you're experiencing and it does have an effect. The combat in both Batman games is really really REALLY good, so to go to something that's just ok is jarring. The combat is Uncharted is not as fast, it's not as dynamic, Drake can't take as much punishment, there's less *POW* impact overall and you're fighting less guys (in most cases). However, as you've noted, it's an excellent and exciting story with some of the best cutscenes in the biz.

I say, sit back, relax and just let the experience wash over you. Enjoy it! 🙂

It's not learning the system, it's the fact that the controls are so loose with the Uncharted games. Play Gears, another TPS and see the huge difference in the shooting. Gears is tight, Uncharted is all over the place.

This is why I've stalled out somewhere around halfway through Uncharted 2 both times I tried to play it. I finished 1 but felt the same control issues. The sloshiness in the aiming and movement is very unsatisfying. It's balanced by the fact that no matter the difficulty level, the series keeps most every encounter challenge free so it's not hard to progress the story. It just feels like playing tennis left handed with a 10 ft^2 racket and an opponent who carefully sets up every shot to make your return trivial - doable but unengaging.

I've debated just setting it on the easiest setting so I can play through and hear / watch the story at the fastest pace possible. I like the banter back and forth between Drake and whoever his partner is at the time and sneaking up on opponents, but like was said, the controls are "loose" (good way of describing it) so I may just fight through my annoyances with this one but take back 3 while I can still return it sealed.

The fighting is the worst thing in the Uncharted series. You're supposed to play the part of a somewhat regular guy on an adventure, which is very much marred by the fact that you kill hundreds of guys by the time the game is over.

If they took out all the gunplay and made the game about adventuring with the occasional fist-fight, it'd be much better off.

All in my opinion, of course. 🙂

Just play through it on the easiest setting. The controls in Uncharted 2 are actually noticeably tighter than 1, however there are much more frustrating enemies to come as you progress through the game so if you're not having fun in the jungle level it might not get any better for you.

I started Uncharted 2 right after finishing 1, so the controls actually felt much improved to me.

yea the controls are loose for sure, but i got used to em.

games where you have to use the right analog in general to aim on the PS3 controller usually have pretty shitty controls, especially compared to the counterpart on 360. i wish uncharted was on 360 for the simple reason of using the 360 controller. the ps3 analog sticks are way too loose in general.

i actually think the controls got tighter from part 1 to part 2. but the controls are a big reason i don't like playing vs multiplayer in uncharted, because it is just too tough to aim for me in a fast paced environment. the AI is pretty dumb though so they are easy to kill.

oh and i loved everything about uncharted 2, EXCEPT for the final boss fight. i HATED that part of the game.

EDIT:

oh i also tihnk the hand to hand combat is the worst part of the controls in this game.

I got the platinum trophy for UC1 and UC2 and I enjoyed both thoroughly, although I felt the story gets a little wonky near the end. The controls can be a little sketchy regarding cover. Sometimes for example it's really important that I snap to cover on the left in a standing position rather than snap to a lower cover on the right in a crouched position due to the location of the enemies...problem is that sometimes the game snaps me to the wrong cover and u die. Or I want to snap OUT of cover but the game thinks I want to snap to the ledge to the right, I get kind of tensed up in the sticky situation and die. Stuff like that kinda sucks. Also the platforming can be a little sketchy at times. Overall tho, I think naughty dog has some extreme talent and the uncharted games are rightfully labeled "greatest hits". If you don't like the game then it's just an issue of taste really, which is cool.

Anyway, if u don't like the feel of UC2 I imagine the third feels the same

To me, the story/exploration/voice acting definitely outweighed the negatives. Great voice acting is just like a great actor in a movie, it can suck you in. Just like the Mass Effect games.

I played it basically for the story. I didn't care much for the controls/gameplay, but the story, voice acting, etc... was fantastic.

Drop down to the easiest setting if you just want to experience the story.

I thought uncharted had great controls and gameplay. I don't get the part about controls being worse than Arkham Asylum. To me they felt almost exactly the same, except Arkham is slightly more scripted than Uncharted.

Yeah, Uncharted's gameplay is a little ridiculous, since you take out hundreds of professional soldiers and you're just a dude who wears distressed blue jeans. I would have liked it to be a bit more realistic and for Drake to have to sneak by people more. Also, did anyone find it funny how far Zoe keeps up her double agent thing?

I actually like Uncharted MP more than Halo and COD4 and other shooter games. A lot more. In many ways I feel like Uncharted is what Metal Gear Solid 4 should have been.

I am starting to see that you seem pretty set on the PS3 being way better than anything the Xbox has to offer. The controls are extremely loose, and the MP comes no where near Halo or COD.

Its not very fair to compare those games. COD and Halo are first person shooters and uncharted is a third person platformer/shooter. The MP is going to be a very different experience between the two categories and third person game controls are bound to be looser than first person.

I thought uncharted 2 had a fantastically designed multiplayer with many different game modes, an interesting and fun reward/xp system, and it maintained all the cover and platforming controls found in the campaign. It would have been more fair to compare uncharted with gears of war since they both operate on a cover system and are both third person.

Wait until a special encounter in a jungle setting with very jumpy natives. If that doesn't make you hurl your controller through your tv, you are a better man than I.
