For those who hate rap, hate it all you want... but it is "music"

*topic title changed for clarity*

Rap can be and is very good music... Rock music, falls into the same category of massive amounts of suckage and a minority of genuinely great music.

You can dislike the music all you want... I freakin HATE most country... but I would never be so assanine as to call it "non-music".

But really since Rap music makes up somewhere around 15% of all music sales... I think we can safely say, it doesnt matter if you deem it music or not... a huge number of people do. Therefore you lose.

But seriously... when you make comments like what I've seen in many threads throughout ATOT, like "rap is just some people screaming at each other" You really show your ignorance.

P.s. not really sure about the crippled man reference.... but hey... I like it

A huge number of people are deeply in credit card debt, that doesn't mean credit card debt is good.

I like a some rap, but the "its popular so it must be good" point doesn't really hold water. Britney Spears albums are pretty popular.

It seems for some reason, that people who are really into rap feel a need to try to convert people, moreso than say, jazz listeners. Kinda like bible beaters, wierd huh?

I do listen to rap, as I do almost all genres of music. What I do not like is my personal preferrence and nothing more. I hate rap songs where the entire song seems to be one or two lines repeated over and over. Thats not music thats chanting.

As far as I'm concerned, whether or not I like a particular piece of rap is all in the production. I don't generally like stuff that's just got a beat. I need to hear some samples or a nice bass line or something.

Hey look I'm not saying everyone has to like rap, I'm saying to dismiss it all as non-music is ridiculously stupid.

In the OP you call out rock and country. Two types that have very large fan bases. You first point out how those two suck and why we should embrace rap. Classic persuasion tactics, but I can make my own decisions so, go for it maybe you can pull a few strays into the flock.

He's just saying that with the sales that rap holds, it has value to the people otherwise they wouldn't keep buying it. Unless you're a straight up retard.

No you misunderstand me... I dislike country, but I acknowledge that it's most certainly music, and in many cases very good music. I'm comparing my feeling about country, to many people's feelings about rap. Pointing out the difference that while I acknowledge the music that I dislike as music, and often good music, those who hate rap dismiss it as non-music. And thats just stupid.

Clear enough?

Blah blah blah.

I despise cRap.

Really though, pretty much all popular music is shiat.

Electronica > *

Hmm, now, i'm guessing most of you won't like that. Why? Because it's just my opinion, that's all. Same as your OP. Nothing but your opinion, so as far as i am concerned, Rap is still crap :)

The Roots make music. Alot of everything else is just borrowed music with altered words so it can rhyme smoothly.

Dictionary.com has several definitions of music that vary widely. Look at this one from WordNet:

"An artistic form of auditory communication incorporating instrumental or vocal tones in a structured and continuous manner".

So basically, anything that is audible and structured (can be written down, repeated, and/or is based on historical structures) is music. So almost any non-accidental sound is music.

But there are other dictionaries listed there. Consider the American Heritage Dictionary:

"The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre."

Rap is certainly continuous, unified, and evocative composition. But does it include those four requirements? Its got rhythm and timbre down quite well. But it often lacks any form of melody or harmony in big portions of the songs. So based on that definition, many rap songs (or even just parts of rap songs) are borderline music. And those specific songs and/or parts of songs probably should be labeled poetry not music.

Anything can be construed as music. But with rap, when you take the actual music away, all you've got left is some guy talking.

What constitutes music? If I clap my hands together in rythym is it music? If I scratch my nails on a chalkboard in a pattern, is it music?

Anything could constitute art because it is merely an expression of the artist. I can take a crap on my desk and call it art. That doesnt mean it smells good.

yea so all of the neptunes music has been stolen from previous musicians ... right

Doboji is right ... people are ignorant to say that rap is not music simply because they dislike it. And on these boards it seems that if you hate rap, you have to come into any thread that deals with rap, even though you hate it, and let everyone know that you hate rap and how much it sucks. that doesn't happen when you see threads about alternative, rock, or pretty much any other type of music.

singing != music

when you take out the "music" as you say from a trance/house song that has no words, you are left with absolutely nothing, not even a guy talking. so what now, trance and house are not considered music?

Well... people may not pop in to say other music genres suck, but people do almost always come in and say Band X sucks hard, Band Y is way better.
