Hey Guys since we're on the topic I'm seriously considering a A70 for my wife for Christmas, can anyone think of a reason not to go with this model (I've read a number of reviews and everyone seems very happy with it).

Unless you can afford/justify another $100 for the A80, pick up the A70. I just picked one up from www.justsayelectronics.com for $286 shipped same day. The A80 will have an extra megapixel of resolution, a larger CCD, and a flip-out lcd. You can't go wrong with the A70 though. The ONLY gripe I can possibly find is that there is not a battery meter, so you don't know how much charge the batteries have until it's too late. However, my 4 1800mah nimh PowerEX batteries lasted a full weekend of shooting and fooling around (about 80 pictures worth).

I always carry a full charged set of NiMh AAs with me in my camera case as well as an extra CF card - although I should have bought a 512meg card instead of 2x256meg. A fully charged set of 1850Mahx4 batteries will last me a long, long time using the LCD viewfinder. Even longer using the manual viewfinder.

I usually carry a set of decent alkalines as a backup for no other reason than they don't lose their charge as quickly as nimh do when unused. So far I'm still on the same set from when I bought my HP315 a year and a half ago. 🙂

That's a good idea. I just stick to the NiMh because with 4x1850Mah there's a ton of battery life there for my a70. Then to have two sets is a good balance. Plus, if i'm going anywhere extended (which is never) then I take my charger with me. If all that fails then alkalines are good to go.

I'm just thinking of giving my Energizer charger to my bro-in-law and getting the Maha charger with trickle technology which you can then trickle charge your batts so they are super topped off and then i'll have 2 full sets of batts. It would be even better if I had 2200 Mah. Heck, it would be better if I had 3 sets of batts! Or 4!

BTW, most FAQs will say that storing your NiMh batteries in the fridge will slow down the discharge if that's your thing. They also say that you should let your batteries warm to room temp before using them of course.

Did I say I love my a70?
