Which inexpensive digital camera has manual shuttle speed control?
preferr 5 seconds.
 
What do you consider inexpensive?

Check out the Canons. I know that my S40 (as well as the S30) have manual shutter and aperature settings. Some lower ones may as well. I'm sure that other manufactures do as well.
 
Canon A60 and A70 are under $300. You could probably squeak in not only an A60, but also a set of NiMH AA's, a charger, and either a second CF card or a Canon Deluxe Tripod 200, all for under $300. Dell.com has the tripod, just do a search for "tripod." I got one and it's not bad for what it costs.

Not sure how much the A80 will cost, but you might look at that also.
 
Why not take the $300 you were going to spend on a cheaper camera and put it into the fund for the $1000 EOS, that way you're $300 up on what you need anyway 🙂

Hey Guys since we're on the topic I'm seriously considering a A70 for my wife for Christmas, can anyone think of a reason not to go with this model (I've read a number of reviews and everyone seems very happy with it).

I am extremely happy with my A70. The pictures it takes are awesome. One problem I have noticed is that it does not take good outdoors shots when it is overcast. I have two shots of my family, one when the sun was covered by clouds and one when the sun was not. The difference in clarity is shocking. I noticed this on a friend A70 also. It like light. Also has a lot of redeye, but all cameras with the flash that close to the lens do. It also likes plenty of battery power. Supposedly the picture worsens with lower power batteries. Just keep a handful of NIMH rechargeables around and you?ll be fine.
 
I would go Confused's route. Canon has just released the Rebel EOS and street price should be about $800. Makes no sense to eat depreciation on an interim. Don't forget - lenses are extra. 🙂

But - it is a new world. I have a Canon EOS D60 - got it a year ago August - and have taken over 3000 pictures with it using a variety of lenses. I also carry a small, digital Elph for pocket situations where the large camera would not be cool. It all fits into a camera backpack by Besseler.
 
I have Canon A60 and Olympus C-4000 and although I think A60 is a great camera for the money, the picture quality on the C-4000 is so much better... I went to France for spring break and took some pictures with the C-4000 and compared the pictures to the ones I took up on Mount. Rainer with the A60 and they are not even comparable... I can be really picky when it comes to picture quality though. You can get the A60 for well under $300, but I would look for something else. I honestly think that Olympus has the best camera lenses out of anyone and if you go to BestBuy, they will tell you the same thing.

Would you be interested in buying my A60 by any chance? I don't have the box for it anymore, but I have all the accessories, CD, and the manual book that came with the camera. Let me know. 🙂

Ok on the left we have a 2MegaPixel camera while on the right we have a 4MegaPixel camera, how can you even attempt to compare them? Apples and apples please not apples and oranges.

Canon EOS D10 > Canon EOS Digital Rebel

Too bad the EOS D10 costs so damn much. I'm looking forward to the D10's replacement. Hopefully the D10 replacement shouldn't cost too much more than what the EOS Digital Rebel costs now. The Rebel is a nice machine, but it's too entry level for my tastes. If you're gonna go SLR, you may as well jump to a model worth the extra expense that an SLR demands.

Yes, I can think of one. It is too big and heavy. I went through exhaust research for my girlfriend's birthday presennt about a year ago. The Canon A40 and Fuji 2600 were at the top of my list until I actually went to the store and played with them. Within a few minutes I knew that she would not use them as much as she could because of their size and weight.

I ended up with a Sony P2. Especially for a point and shoot camera for a woman, smaller is better. A "purse-sized" camera is going to get more use and end up being the better present. The Sony P8/10 and the Canon S400/S230/SD100 are the models that I would consider if I were buying today.
 
Ya someone here (@work) already mentioned the weight/bulk factor of camera's for girls however it's better then her current film camera, and for her use(s) is doesn't really need to be "pursable" 😀 .

I guess I should also add that it's more then just a Woman camera it'll be used by myself and perhaps other family members who will enjoy the slightly advanced (non-point and shoot) features.

The S400 being a 4MP camera is likely out of the price range I'm lookin @ , but I'll definately do some pokin around in reviews and pricing just to be sure.

Even if her current camera is not small, you take a differnet approach with a digital. My girlfriend takes at least 5 times the number of pictures as before. With a digital, there are not costs associated with each "click". That won't happen if the camera is big.

I have edited my previous post with camera suggestions. I know that there are multiple settings on the Sony's. Check out this site. It was a huge help with my research.

get a S230 and a nice 256 (or more) CF, a second battery.
And a nice video editing program like Vegas4.0.

I can honesty say that my S230 was one of the best purchases i ever made - size and everything included. Just by *using* the cam (and, yeah, my wife uses it too, sometimes even more than me 🙂 i know now how important the size factor is...and that a bigger camera (i consider the a70 big already) would be a total no-no.
You should see the surprised faces when i take that small thing and start shooting - and then tell people that i am actually doing a video 🙂
The reaction is always people can not believe that that tiny thing is capable of shooting videos too.

Even better, at home then when i take all the clips and put 'em together in Vegas, put some sound track on it etc...

And besides, picture quality is definetly decent and the thing is very easy to use, be it for photos or for videos.
If S400 is over your budget, get the S230 !

Top rated camera in it's price point and then some. What else can you say?

Great pics, awesome VGA movie mode (although limited to 30 secs. Arggh!) and great battery life with 4AA. CF memory is cheapest.

The only downside(s) are it's slightly heavy (relatively) with the 4xAAs - but the battery life is awesome! And that's about it ....

Have you checked out the reviews at DPReview and such? They love this camera above all others in it's price range.

Have the A60, high capacity NiMH batteries and charger, a 128MB flash card and a neat Canon camera pouch. It all came in to 340? at the end. (400$ - dollar is weak at the moment).

The full manual mode kicks ass!!

The best for Canada right now is Tigerdirect.ca which has the a70 for 370 CAD plus shipping and taxes. If you are out of Ont then you only pay GST I believe which makes the a70 something like 430 total, shipped. However, since you are in OTT then you may get dinged for PST too.

Other than that Staples.ca has it for 449.99 less 50 off coupon and free shipping which makes it just over 450 or so. That's what I got mine for.

I love my A70, but I'm a total point'n'click noob with cameras. The transfer software is very easy to use. My camera eats batteries, but I take lots of shots of small children running around, so you can imagine how hard it is to get one GOOD shot in a lot of 100. I'll probably pick up some NimH rechargeables soon.

Search Off Topic for "A70" and you'll find a bunch of threads dated about 6 months ago - there were a bunch of hot deals going on then.

Unless you can afford/justify another $100 for the A80, pick up the A70. I just picked one up from www.justsayelectronics.com for $286 shipped same day. The A80 will have an extra megapixel of resolution, a larger CCD, and a flip-out lcd. You can't go wrong with the A70 though. The ONLY gripe I can possibly find is that there is not a battery meter, so you don't know how much charge the batteries have until it's too late. However, my 4 1800mah nimh PowerEX batteries lasted a full weekend of shooting and fooling around (about 80 pictures worth).
