I did not know you couldn't "have" your prescription.

Snippet:
"Contact lens law may help consumers. Some doctors prefer system already in place.

A new federal law gives contact lens wearers something eyeglasses wearers have had for 25 years -- the legal right to a copy of their prescription so they can shop around for lenses. "

[Well looky there, an emdash. :p ]

Snippet:
"The federal measure, known as the Fairness to Contact Lens Consumers Act, was passed last month and signed into law Dec. 6 by President Bush. It will take effect Feb. 4."

Good news. In the past, I've always had to get separate exams (and prescriptions) for my contacts and eyeglasses. This might save a couple of dollars in the future.

I've never had a problem getting my contact prescription. I didn't even know it was a problem.

I found out a couple of yrs ago that in my state your prescription is only good for 2-3 yrs. I can't remember exactly. After that time, you have to get retested.

I believe mine is good for only two years as well but after two years it is a good choice to get a new exam anyways.

Ditto that, a pain in the ass when you want to use contacts for less and the exam is fourteen months old. My vision hasn't gotten worse and the Doctor wants another 100$ to recheck them. What a rip off.

Whether or not the state has a rule, anyone's prescription is only good for a few years because peoples eyes are always changing. If you just get new glasses/contacts every couple years without having your eyes checked, you're doing yourself more harm than good since you probably aren't seeing as well as you should.

Do you guys go through a long fitting process for contacts?
I've been to the optometrist 4 times already. She is having me try several different lenses to see which ones fit/feel better.
Actually right now I am doing a controlled experiment between "proclear" and "soflens" I am wearing proclear in one eye and soflens in another trying to decide which ones I should pick.
I guess once I settle on a fit, I'll ask her for a prescription so I can buy them online.

Well, last time I got glasses, the doctor overprescribed them. I went to the new optometrist, and she said my 3 year old glasses were close to my vision while the 1 year olds were too strong. Actually I knew it all along and kept wearing the old glasses. Something just felt weird with the new ones.
