I've had my dell 2005fpw since january and i've used a 15.4 inch 1200x800 notebook for the past year and I couldn't be happier. I know alot of people knock wide screens, especially for gaming but it doesn't seem like these people have actually tried them. So is there anybody who actually had a widescreen, used it for a bit, and decided it wasn't for them?

I sold mine.. The resolution was too high (1680 x 1050) for me my development sessions.. And for development, I find two monitors are actually better than one widescreen (one for dev, and one for doc)..

I replaced my 2005FPW with 2 1905FP 19" which run at 1280x1024.. The 1905's aren't as bright as the 2005FPW though, and the 19's have crazy ghosting - evident when you drag a dos window around..

I have a 2005fpw which I've had for a few weeks now and I love it. My old monitor a Samsung 191T is doing great work as a second display at the moment.

As far as gaming goes if a title supports widescreen natively it is great. I do find some games a little annoying for not supporting widescreen or not doing it properly. Hello Half Life 2 - I'm talking to you.

I probably wouldn't go back to a 4:3 monitor, no. I've had my 2005FPW since January. It's great for everything I do - especially gaming, DVD's, and HDTV. 🙂

NEVER!!!

I have 2x 2005fpws ( 1 on my main machine, and one on my Mac Mini )

I am going to get a 2405 soon to replace my 2005fp..

Widescreen kicks ass, and this monitor SMACKS my Sony 21" CRT as well.

As far as I know, HL2 is one of the games that does provide complete widescreen support without having to manually edit config files or anything....not sure what you're getting at. 😕

WTF are you talking about HL2 displays 16:10 PERFECTLY...

on a side note that may be more on topic.
I would never get rid of my 2405FPW....

I like my 2005FPW, but my brother will use it sometimes, and I don't think he cares for widescreen too much. He sets up one Firefox windows that takes up half of the screen, and he doesn't have an IM dock or anything on the side, so you can see as much of the desktop as Firefox. He plays FarCry sometimes, and he uses 1280*1024 FULLSCREEN (using 1:1 on the 2005FPW), even though my system can run 1680*1050 perfectly fine. I absoluely love widescreen for gaming, and regular web surfing, because I can have the taskbar on the left, and an IM dock on the right, and still have space to use a browser. I took a screenshot of a Firefox window, and it was 1397*1050 pixels, which is almost a 4:3 (normal) aspect ratio for FF. When I do something in fullscreen like gaming or watching a movie, then widescreen comes in handy, but I understand why it would be bad for coding: reading/writing something in such a wide length is weird, and the main reason why I have regular windows setup like a 4:3 display.

Are you disagreeing with me or the person I quoted...?

No, I'll never go back to 4:3. Even though some games don't support widescreen, I've been able to configure them all to play on it and I love it. When I had to return my first 2005FPW for replacement, I went back to my 17" LCD and I couldn't take it. I felt like I was looking into a box, while with my 2005FPW I felt like I was in the box. That's the difference 🙂

A poll wouldn't serve much purpose here, I wanted some feedback. Besides, alot of anti widescreeners would just vote negatively despite never having tried widescreen. From my experience and from what i've read it seems most people are not only satisfied with WS but loathe going back to normal aspect.

i agree that 2 monitors is better than 1 bigger one for development.

i have a planar 20" 4:3 monitor at home, i'm pretty happy with it. you get more pixels with a 4:3 20" than a 16:10 one and the viewable area is a bit more too. since i dont really watch very many movies full screen on my computer (i have a projection tv for that) i would think a 4:3 would be better, seeing as most webpages and such are made for it.

at work i have 2 17" lcds for development, and it is definitely much better. work wise i'd rather have 2 17" lcds than 1 20". i guess having 2 monitors sort of forces you to seperate your windows out , i.e. msdn on one window, visual studio on the other etc. i suppose 3 monitors would be even better. haha.
