which game is better? I know they are not really the same type of games, but which one do you like best? Ive been a GW player for the past year or so and ive maxed out 3 chars. The game has gotten a little boring, and am losing interest. I am thinking about getting a copy of WoW, but i want some opinions first before i dish out the cash for the game and the monthly fees...

I think WoW has better replay value.

The only thing I like about GW is I can stop playing whenever I want since I'm not paying monthly fees.

Try doing a search. This has seriously been asked well over a hundred times on this forum alone.

For me there is one major deciding factor between WOW and GW. This factor is the $15 fee.
I dont care how good a game is, there is no reason why I should pay money for a game after having already paid $40-$50 for the game itself. Some people are going to say that the monthly fees are to cover the server maintanance costs and to root out hackers. Well, Blizzard and many other companies had no trouble maintaining their servers in the past without milking us for money. Diablo 2 was freee to play online, and so is GW. I'm sure Anet(company behing GW) spends money to maintain their server and to root out hackers, yet they are decent enough to understand that money dont fall from the sky for most gamers. But I'll stop ranting, since I'm getting carried away here with my anger. *Takes deep breath*

Ok... The bottom line is, Guild Wars is designed to be a mostly PvP game - NOT a roleplaying game (even though it has a RPG portion). Unless you like PvP, and you want to PvP all the time, you have no business playing Guild Wars. I'm not saying it to be mean. It's the truth. GW beats WoW when it comes to the PvP, since the GW system is deeper, and favors the player's skill, over "godly weapons" or "l33t items". In GW, it's all about your skill, and no "Uber Fiery Demon sword or Annihilation" wil help you win in PvP. That's the best thing about GW.

WoW on the other hand, is more about the RPG, and grinding for items. In that respect, WoW wins over GW hands down.
So please concider what I said, and this should be enough for you to decide. Hope this helps.

WoW is far more bandwidth intensive than Diablo. Bandwidth is expensive on such a huge scale. There is also a TON more serverside processing going on. Server farms aren't exactly cheap. You can't compare a MMO and battle.net, its extremely apples to oranges.

You pay monthly for cable tv, internet, cell phone, etc. You don't buy a cell phone from verizon and expect free service for the life of the phone, do you? MMOs wouldn't survive without a pay to play structure.

GW is far more comparable to Diablo than an MMO as far as costs are concerned.

The problem is that the GW servers only have to run select content, most of the content is on your machine. Diablo runs its server for you to find games then one person is the host, same with all of Blizzards other nonMMO. Unfortunately you and your friends dont have the computer hardware or bandwidth to support your own WoW persistent world. I think someone calculated that they spend over a million in bandwidth each year if membership stayed flat. On top of this you expect GMs that are available - unlike in Diablo where there was someone on for a few hours *sometimes* and this person basically would tell you to email someone else about your issue or restart your computer.

I suppose it is all about what you expect from the game itself - if you dont want to pay fees then dont consider the purchase of games that require fees but dont dismiss them as a ploy without doing any research and especially dont compare a multitude of multiplayer games that have totally different models than an MMO to an MMO to support your fact that an MMO shouldnt have fees... or whatever it was that your point was because you do kind of get side tracked in the end.

Also there are uber items that can help you a lot in GW - some people scavange all over for them and they DO help you in PvP. I would tend to agree that it is more of a skill based game than WoW. However I wouldnt claim it to be by much, you are using a combination of moving and pressing hotkeys for the most part.. there really isnt that much to it. I would argue less skill than an FPS more skill than WoW and thats not assuming were talking about WoW capture the flag or raiding.

EDIT: I thought I should add that I do NOT subscribe to or play WoW. Im waiting for something better in an MMO with more depth.

wow is about a million times better (and yes i've played both) but with GW i don't feel obligated to log on because there is no monthly fee.

I really enjoyed playing Guild Wars until I'd max'd out two characters. I just couldn't bring myself to bring another one through all the missions.

I absolutely LOVED World of Warcraft...for about 30 levels. After that it became less fun, more grind grind grind. I quit before I even hit 40 on my first character. I hear that as you approach 60 it only gets worse, and then once you hit 60 there's nothing to do but raid quests all day, every day...or the PvP battlegrounds.

I think my problem is that I played Asheron's Call for over 4 years. I had a lot of fun, knew a lot of great people there, and now no MMO-type game will ever be as good as the memories I have of AC.

A lot of new MMO's do a lot of things better than AC did, but I think for most people, nothing matches the first experience you have of being an MMO newbie. ;)

When I started AC, it was all about exploring and experiencing the virtual world, and being part of a virtual society. After playing that for 4+ years, that changed. Now any MMO I play is instantly about levelling and loot, and the appeal just wears off quickly.

Citizen...I hear that from a lot of people these days. I never played a MMORPG till WOW, but I truly wish that I had because to be part of that virtual online world would have been awsome. I know quite a few people who still speak to those who they started to play with back in the days of AC and EQ1.

I play WOW once a month every four or five months and the main reason is to keep it fresh for me...so grinding is actually fun (lol I'm only level 36 also), and I also try to syncronize it with my friends who like to play and start new characters.

Yes, I do pay for TV and phone, but paying for these feels right, since they are more of a necessity. Paying for a MMO feels wrong, since it's only a game.
Even if you think about it in practical terms, it feels wrong. Concider this: $15 x 12 = 180
2 years of WoW=$360. For $360 I can get a really nice video card which will give me an overall much better value than WoW, because I'll have nice gfx, and will be able to play all those nice games that dont requitre an online fee.
I'd like to stress that I'm NOT trying to rub my point in. You may do and think what you want. I respect that. I'm merely sharing my own thoughts on the topic.

I didnt know WoW requires so much bandwidth... I suppose $15 is justified then. However it is still not justified in practical terms. (I explained why in my above post)

And waht you said about GW, is wrong. You clearly didnt play the game enough. There is no such thing as uber items. It only SEEMED to you that there were. Practically any item with best stats can be easily obtained from a collector or a crafter after the last patches.
There is only a small degree of grinding required to get the mods. (That's in PvE)

In PvP, no grinding is required at all, since all best mods can be unlocked through points you get from winning.

Guild Wars is LAME. Dont waste your money. That game is not worth wasting space on my hard drive. Or the cd it was burned on.

I try'd really hard to like it. But couldnt play a character past lv 6 without RUNNING back to WoW looking for my friends, and hoping my guild hasn't kicked me out for not logging in 2 weeks.

I have a large number of friends who play WoW, including myself. Unless you are in an uber guild the game doesn't seem fun, at least to me. I had friends who were guildless or in crappy guilds and they hated the experience. If you get lucky like I did and get into a good guild, the game is extremely fun! That being said, I have seen literally every piece of content the game has to offer from a raiding perspective (guild is on C'Thun). You won't really know if u like WoW until you hit 60 as the game completely changes at that point. It's definately worth trying though!

People have their gripes with WoW, but it is by far the best MMORPG out on the market right now. I've played WoW and GW but I'm currently playing DDO because I wanted to get into something new/different.
