Is the area around Key Arena really that bad? I wanted to go to a hockey game there but he's flipping out. He says it will be night time and since it's such a "bad neighborhood" everything will happen short of me being raped. =/ Is he just over protective or is it really a place that you wouldn't wanna walk in at night?

I was just there on travel for work and walked all around the area (the space needle, rock and roll museum and some other museum are next door) around the arena both in daylight and night time. I never felt threatened and the area seemed nice to me.

I used to live on 2nd Ave. and W. Republican....like 3 blocks from the Seattle Center, and that area is perfectly safe at night. Not once did I ever feel threaten. Hell, even the bums were friendly.

I'm guessing you're female? I'm not particularly familiar with that area, but I stayed a week at a hostel a few blocks up from Pike Place. The area made me nervous at night, yeah, and there were a few comments from the homeless on the street. If you're going to the arena though, there should be lots of people around, right? I'd think it was okay then.

I go there once every couple months for a hockey game or just to hang out. You'll be fine.

Well, I'm not sure what to tell you. What exactly is your friend saying? I lived here and my Grandmother lived on the corner of Queen Anne Ave N. and W Roy St. She routinely walked from her place down to the Bartell Drugs on the corner of First Ave North and Mercer. And she did it up until last year when she died at the age of 92yrs old.

Yes, there are bums, but as I said before, they are all pretty friendly. The bums are even friendlier than the employees of Tower Books which is right there. :D
