Did you actually open the diploma cover and make sure it's in there? I haven't heard of any colleges giving you the actual diploma at the ceremony. Most will hand you an empty diploma cover and mail you the paper itself later.
There is only one university in America that gives you your diploma at your actual ceremony. The University of Nebraska. I got two degrees from there and yes they were in the cover.
I don't understand why more universities don't do this. In order for it to work you just need these:
1) when you apply for your degree you say whether you want it mailed or to receive it in the ceremony.
2) The university sorts the diplomas that will be handed out.
3) You check in 30 minutes before the ceremony and receive a number card and get in order (Nebraska is by college and alphabetical within each college).
4) During the opening speeches a couple of employees remove the diplomas for the people who didn't check in.
5) As you get your diploma everything is in order so they just give you the one on top, but you carry your number card so incase someone left early there isn't a mixup.
