If you have a college degree or are currently in college, do you come from a family with parents who have college degrees?

Both my parents went to college, neither finished. Dad quit to sign up in WWII, Mom quit to get married.

All 5 of their children have degrees, 3 have doctorates.

Both went to college, my mom got her Masters and my dad didn't have enough hours to get a student deferment and headed off for Vietnam.

Nope. My dad went to a tech school for a few years and my mom had one year of college and then quit.

Neither had Bachelors degrees, but both had gone to some form of post-secondary education. Mom was a nurse, dad had taken some farming related college of some sort.

Neither of my parents have degrees. I wouldn't have gone to college if I didn't decide to go into the tech industry. I probably would have followed my dads footsteps and been a cnc machinist.

Both parents have a degree. Dad has his Masters, Mom didn't have a degree until I was in the 4th or 5th grade, she went back to school and got her associates degree.

All my siblings are degreed, but I will have the most advanced degree (Masters)

Nice. My dad owns a machining shop. Like you I probably would have followed his footsteps if I didnt go tech.
Sometimes I still think of saying screw it, go to the local college for machining and going back to work with him.

I really like machining. Good, honest work with a tangible product at the end.

Both my husband and I are first generation college graduates. Both of our children (and my husband) have advanced degrees.

What I find interesting is that my in-laws made sure all 4 of their children got degrees on an enlisted military salary, one income family and yet, of the children of those children, only 5 of 9 (3 of 7 not counting mine) got degrees. My husband's siblings knew the benefits they got from having a college education, but they didn't make their own children get one.

I haven't really thought about quitting since I started, but I know what you mean. There's no BS corporate structure or ridiculous politics. You make parts and do your job, and if you make quota, everyone's happy. As long as you know what you're doing, it's a fairly stress free job/career.

My mom has one, but it is worthless.

On another note, none of my three siblings finished high school and I am finishing my Masters now... odd, huh?

Exactly. And if your good it still pays fairly well too. And while learning the little tricks and in and outs is a bit time consuming, in the big scheme of things its not that difficult of a job.
I mean, they dont upgrade hardware every 6 months, you dont have to learn 9 different languages across 3 different platforms etc etc etc.

Yeah, machining is a good career. I'll probably go back to it some day, more due to my interests in gun smithing then anything.

My dad got a BS in Finance and Economics and is now working in the financial regulatory industry. He got into database reporting and now is working on XBRL. He got me into computers and since then I got a BS in Business IT. My mom never got a degree and was an excellent homemaker!

My mom has an MBA, and my dad has a law degree. So yes, both degreed. Heh, but neither of them really "use" their advanced degrees, or even their undergrads...my dad does financial stuff, and my mom is a homemaker.

Of the two kids, my sister has an M.D., and I am working on my MSEE now..probably get an MBA later too. Education was always something that was expected in my family.

Jano, its on next weekend! (GT vs. VT)

Dad dropped out of many schools in art & psychology.
Mom never went to college.

I have a B.S. CompE & dropped out of MS program. Now I'm working on my pre-med and hopefully MD in 2012.

Edit:
