For those of you that suspect you might have adult ADHD...

I'm going on my 3rd year of college and as of right now have a 2.2 GPA, with a major in chemistry. I'm a really smart guy, so I couldn't figure out why in the hell I wasn't able to keep up to par with everyone else. I always drifted in class, and I could never study for more than 20 minutes at a time, but I thought I was just lazy and that this is normal for others and they just fight through it.

So I was talking with my shrink since I'm being treated for mild depression (partially school related, partially girl related), and he asked me a few questions. Turns out I had ADHD. He suscribed me adderal. So I got the bottle friday after classes, and worked up to a 45mg dose by monday. Monday was literally life changing. For the first time in 3 years, I was able to sit through a class and stay attentive the entire time. I actually enjoy going to classes now... I have my high schoolish thrist for knowledge back. It's really turned things around for me. This semester I'm looking at a 2.9, and that includes fubar'ing the first half of the semester, before I was on the drugs.

So the moral of the story is, if you think you suffer from this, get help! You have no idea how much it can change your life.

ADHD = scam to sell pills

You don't need a pill, you need to learn discipline and patience.

yup....a guy I know who grad college with me now claims to have it...I think for many it is just a load of BS...I am certian that I would be diagnosed with it but I know that I am just lazy 🙂

Save yourself the money on pills and just get rid of your TV, game console, and whatever else distracts you.

I was prescribed PlaceboAD and it made huge changes in my ability to do many things in life. Without my PlaceboAD, I'd probably be selling my ass on a street corner for rocks, but look at me now! Thanks PlaceboAD! 😀

Anyway, whether it's crap or not, it is overprescribed, but on the other hand a lot of people do better with pills. Whether they are merely discipline in a bottle, one thing is for sure and that's that some people are more easily distracted from others. I have no doubt that I could benefit from some ADHD medication too. I can never concentrate for long periods unless it's something I'm interested in, in which case it's no problem.

that doesnt work. And I doubt he brings his tv, game console and whatever to class with him.

People that really suffer from this can be in an empty room and still not be able to sit and read a chapter in a book without stopping 20 times.

No, they need to improve their diet, and get more exercise and productive sleep.

"Chemical inbalances" is an overused term, as it implies that there actually is a correct balance, and that is it not scientifically true. Like the term "lactose intolerant" when in fact only about 20% of the world's population is actually lactose tolerant.

Yeah I imagine that these are easy things to say if you are not effected by one of these disorders.

I dont know if i understand what you are saying so let me recap: Improving your diet, excercising and getting more sleep will fix peoples mental illnesses. is that it?

It implies there is a normal range, and somebody who's life is otherwise normal but they continually obsess about jumping off a bridge is not living within that normal range. I've no doubt you know people who just seem always continually happy. Nothing seems to get them down, but do they have better diets, more sleep, more exercise than you? Probably not, but they are just always happy. Similarly some people are always unhappy.

My sleep and diet and exercise regimens are better than the vast majority of people and I tell you I still can't concentrate on anything for very long unless it's inherently interesting. I have a tough time staying focused on something that's boring and crappy! Sure, this is natural, but some people can still study some boring nonsense for an entire evening, but I never could.

Actually, ADHD is a recognized disorder. I have had it since I was 5. Biochemically, there is an increase in the re-uptake of certain neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and norepinephrine. When a patient is taking ADHD drugs, the frontal-striatal regions of the Hey, look, a doggie! Look at the little doggie. Come here boy......
