For those of you making 6 figures, how old were you when you broke that barrier?

It is very possible for someone in their early 20's to make between 80-160 thousand a year as a contractor in Iraq. The main downside besides the danger, is that you have to work 80+ hours a week.

It's true about NY tho. A LOT of people in the corporate world clear that kinda money, even right out of college. My friend (who's admittedly pretty damn smart) cleared 100k right out of college (with masters) at Google at only 22 years old. Living costs are hella expensive though. That's why I live in Jersey City and am TRYING to stop partying as much as I have. There was a day at the end of last year where I went out partying with a bunch of co-workers; got really hammered, partied with some girls, got more hammered and was coerced into going to a strip club.
Total Damage for the Night: $900+
Look on my face the next morning: Priceless

Basically, yea. There was an NYT article on that a few months ago.

Could probably clear twice that if your good.

As an added bonus, you get to shoot people. See, when I have a bad day I want to shoot people. When they have a bad day they get to shoot people. Whats not to like?

My wife and I put together don't quite make six figures. I live in one of the most inexpensive places too though. 250K can buy you a 3 or 4k sq ft 5 bedroom house with a three car garage.

Tom Brady, huh? Are you single? :p

There is no accounting for region of where you live. $100k in the midwest is much more than 100k in NorCal.

I'm 43 and I'm still not there yet. I'm in the low 80's as a programmer. Wasted too much time at the University and based on my last few pay increases it will be a long time if I ever get there. I got promoted this year and my pay increase was actually less than what I got last year! Very depressing! :(

This thread got me looking at my future salary if I stay where I'm at once I finish school.

If I were to graduate today, my base pay would be $36k, then $44k after year 1, and $53k after year 2. By year 4 you are at 75k if you pass your performance reviews, and you pretty much top out there unless you become a technical lead or go into management.

Based off this thread I should look for a new job. :p

Probably never but it's not all about money. Having enough for the future, a roof, food, happiness, thats wealthy if you ask me.

Aye, it has been said before, but it really does mean a whole lot. You can live in parts in the Midwest or South where all of your monthly expenses (rent/mortgage, food, utilities, insurance etc) is less than just the average rent/mortgage in other areas.

I remember talking with someone who went from D.C. to Ohio and took a pay cut, but ended up with a lot more money in the bank.

I will probably never make that much (high school teacher). My nephew first made six figures in a year when he was 18. That was also the first time he made six figures in a single month.

My $.02
My base salary is less than $100K, (But Expenses and Benefits put it far over, heck, I don't even have to pay for gas or food!)
But, on location: I live in a "Minimum Wage" town. Most employers pay minimum wage or slightly above for skilled labor, such as Construction or Welders. (For instance: Skilled Masons w/10 years experience: $8:00 Hr.!)
(FYI: I have always worked away from that town for the extra pay.)
$100K will buy you a 6+ Bedroom, 3 Bath, 2 car Garage home on a 1.5 acre lot in a Restricted subdivision.
So, my wages put me in the upper 5% of income in my town, though I don't live in a McMansion.

Edit: BTW, I am almost 50, and the closest I've ever came to $100K is about $93K while self employed. (What I paid myself, not gross)
