who do you root for if you live out in montana or idaho?
college teams? the closest neighboring states' team? your hometown team?

also for those who live in states with multiple teams (i.e. Cali, NY, Texas), how do you choose who you root for?

being in NY, i root for the islanders, giants, yanks and knicks.

I'm in NY, but I usually root for the local HS football team in Boise, Idaho. The French Fryers :p

You have nothing better to do than force yourself into caring for a team simply because of their proximity to you? I swear to God I'll never understand sports fans.

I guess the same can be true towards your interest in automotive vehicles. Just because you live in the US, doesn't mean you'll ever drive an American made car :p

Hmm... that's some resounding logic :) :cookie;

But since I don't like american cars, even though I do live in the US, I don't really get the link...

Let's put it in YOUR words skoorby...

You have nothing better to do than force yourself into caring about a car simply because of their proximity to you? I swear to God I'll never understand car buyers.

As I interpret the sentence, one shouldn't really be rooting for the domestic team (car), but rather that it's okay to support foreign teams(cars). Can I make it anymore clearer to you? (or if that isn't what you meant, I'm going to have to ask for a refund for the AP English exam I took during high school :p )

they're not being forced... why would you root for a team that isn't close to you? at least if it's close you can go to some of the games.

also, i saw something from noam chomsky where he says sports teams satisfy our primal urge for tribal competition. so the sports teams are like our tribes fighting for us... it's been awhile but i think that's the gist of it

I'm sort of with Skoorb, and think KGB's 'logic' is retarded. People own particular cars for a reason, but most fans don't play any sport at all, so why would they care about any particular team?

We have all the pro sports represented here in Cleveland, and I don't give a damn about any of them, whether they're winning or not. The only people more irrational than sports fans, are the irritating fair weather fans.

I've wondered that too. Why should you care about this group of athletes over that group, based on the city they play in. I think it has to do with the fact that it's the only team you can go to games. And the fact that you hear about it every night on the news. I'm a sports fan living in AZ, but I can't get into any AZ teams. I'm an ASU alum, and I could care less about ASU sports. I'm from Indiana, and support the Colts and Hoosiers (basketball).

I live in Charlotte and I've always been a fan of the Carolina Panthers! For other sports:

Col. BB - I'm Tarheel Bred so I support UNC.
Col. FB - Sadly, here too I am a UNC fan! Growing up in Toronto we could catch 'Cuse games on American TV though...they were good back then!
Basketball - Still somewhat of a Hornets fan, don't know if I'll like the Bobcats. Starting to become a Dallas fan though...they're damn good and I like the Euro players
Hockey - Die Hard Leafs fan!!!

If I were in a state without sports teams I'd cheer for myself because of all the money I saved.

Talk about corporate welfare and government pork, professional sports is worse than any other type of business. Where else can an insanely rich person with enough money to spend hundreds of millions on sports team whine that he's too poor, and the government will give in and build them a free stadium so they can make more money.

Fsck that sh!t.

I live in Nebraska. No professional sport teams here. I personally don't watch anything but college football - so I don't root for any other team. Note: I'm also not a Nebraska football fan - even though I'm in school there. However I've asked that exact same question to friends/family of mine that ARE big sports fans. Here are the answers I hear most often:
1) Some are fans of whichever pro team has the most Nebraska players. This is what we see on the news all the time. They will only highlight a professional sport play if it involved a former University of Nebraska player.
2) Some are fans simply since their family has always been fans of that team.
3) Some are fans because a family/friend rooted AGAINST that team. Nice way to make a game interesting by rooting against the person sitting next to you. Then they just keep on rooting to keep the family/friend rivalry going year after year - and eventually they actually like the team, and they root for the team without caring about the rivalry.

If I'm ever forced to watch a pro sport, I'll just root for the underdog since I don't care who wins.

Alabama doesn't have any professional sports teams and doesn't have a city large enough to support one. They've tried numerous pro football teams (including the temporary Canadian Football League team!), but outside of Alabama/Auburn football (ugh!) and Nascar (double ugh!), there's not much widespread interest in pro sports.

Anyway, my teams:

NBA: 76ers and Rockets
NFL: Redskins and Patriots
MLB: Padres and Angels
NHL: Islanders and Avalanche (going back to the horrible Quebec Nordiques days)
