Okay... no cushy tech jobs here for sure.. but some nice things will be open to the public
soon.
These are all jobs working for the City of Detroit.
We just settled our union contract ( 3 years no contract ) and now the city is starting
to hire for the better jobs. I am pretty sure apprentiship programs was only 2 years
before the new contract.. now they are 4 years... so I think they was holding out hiring
for the new contract to take effect.
Please note that due to new state law you no longer need to be a Detroit resident to work for the City of Detroit.
The catch??? Yes there is always one of those.... the only way to see the job postings for the City of Detroit is to go in person to the City County building at 1 Woodward ave.
( corner of Woodward and Jefferson )
To make things even harder.. jobs are often posted for only 10 days.. so you will need to visit weekly to make sure you dont miss the job(s) you are looking for.
If you know the exact job title of the job you are looking for then tell the lady behind the
help counter... she will file your information and you will get a postal mail notice when
the job is posted.
Every few years the city posts some great apprentiship offerings... and now is ALMOST the time. At my work location I cannot see postings that are offered to the public.. they must post them for current employees first.. so the postings I see are for current employees only... HOWEVER... once the intersted current employees fill spots... then it gets posted for the general public.
The time this takes varies greatly... remember this is government.. no ryme or reason.
These positions always reach the public because most current employees are comfterable in the position they are already in.
Anyone who whishes to work for the City of Detroit can do so if they know how to play the game and are willing to do some waiting.
The key is determination.... they have a LOT of jobs... I started as a janitor and have recieved 4 promotions since.. soon to be 5.
There will be a civil service test.. you CAN pass this even if you dont know jack about
the position. Wayne State library has books on all civil service tests.. you cannot check them out.. you must study there or copy the entire book.
Get your foot in the door with any job... after that you will get first chance of any job offering before the public.
In the past they did not check anything on the application... nothing... but I think they may have started doing some minor checking since 9/11. I think putting down
out of business places as a job history is still safe.
I worked my ass off getting a G.E.D. in a hurry for my job... they never asked for proof.
I have the posting/application for the current apprentiship openings in my hand..
however this is for current employees.... they must offer it to us first.
This does not mean that it is not posted for the general public as well... I have no way of knowing that. If it is not currently posted for the public it will be soon... so if you are intersted dont waste any time. If its not posted give them the title you are intersted in and make sure they take you're information.
