For those looking for a Quiet/Silent system, PIII-S is Da Bomb!

I see posts here and there of people looking to build low power, quiet, or silent systems. I've been playing around with a PIII-S 1.26 system. This is a 512K Cache .13u Tualatin "server" CPU. The stock Vcore is 1.45 Volts. With 512K cache, it's a pretty good performer.

I normally run the system 152 FSB, 1.44 GHz. Above 152, my nic stops working and 38 MHz PCI is as high as I like to go. Even @ 1.44 GHz, I run with a slight Undervolt of 1.425 Vcore.

I wanted to see how much Vcore is needed @ stock speed. I've been running Prime95 for the last 1 Hr 1.26 GHz stock speed and an undervolt of 1.225 Vcore! Full load CPU temp is 27 - 28 C. I have the stock HS/Fan installed, but I would say it would be possible to run just a Large HS with just a Power Supply fan to remove the case heat.

This is a sweet setup for the quiet PC crowd.

Doh! Me never gets an undervolt. :disgust:😉

The PIII-S isn't any different from the other full-fledged Tualatins (except the Celeron-II with half the L2 cache) right? How much is the PIII-S @ 1.26GHz? I've been thinking about getting a low-powered CPU and highly integrated board for some LAN loving in the future.

Any suggestions? 🙂

The main difference with the -S is the 512K cache. The Tually Celerons have 256K. There are also some other subtle differences. The Celerons are 1.475 Vcore, the PIII-S 1.45. The PIII-S seem to have a very flat power curve compared to the Tualerons. I'm not sure if the Tualerons will undervolt as well, but I'll check around. I got good deal on mine (new retail) off EGay . There is a new 1.4 GHz PIII-S which should bring the price of the 1.26 down. There is also a 1.13 PIII-S version, and PIII Tually 256K's as well. Again, I'm not sure if the non -S PIII or Tualerons will undervolt as well.

This beast is Socket370 like all the other Cel/P3 processors, right? Anything missing like comparing the old 512k P3's to the newer 256k ones?

I htink the 1.4 appear in japan... still a not bad processor..

I got these in dual, at 1.26 the crank out 7.01 mkey rc5 🙂

I'll bet a P4 rig can be equally silent. If you open up the latest Dell machines you'll see a huge hsf with a "muffler" directing the exhaust to outside the back of the case. This is really funky and it makes for an incredibly silent rig. And this was a non-Northwood P4 system, too.

Everything is relative. And that Dell I referred to was very quiet in absolute terms and compared to my tornado-like rig. It was a Dimension 4400 manufactured this month.

The PIII-S is much faster than most people think it is. On a clock for clock for level it does quite well compared to a Thunderbird.

Yeah, it not too bad a CPU. Sandra 2002 scores:

System:
PIII-S 1.26 @ 1.44 GHz
152 FSB
3-2-2 5/7 ram timing
1.425 Vcore
Win2K Pro

CPU Benchmark:
ALU/FPU
4010/1940

CPU Multimedia Benchmark:
Int/FP
7871/9771

Memory Benchmark:
Int/FP:
1133/1081

I've heard from a few more people. It seems you can run a Tually Celeron or PIII ~ 1.2 - 1.25 Vcore @ default clock speed, which is in line with what mine does.
