I know what he is saying, but that is a seperate issue. I am talking about shifting an item from being illegal to legal...the topic of the thread.

Of what relevance, then, is the cost of any harm that may be caused in the matter of making something legal that is currently illegal?

It is relevant because it is something the public at large will take into account.

You seem to be forgetting, or just don't want to acknowledge, that we ALREADY pay for it. It being illegal isn't making the cost go away when someone comes into a hospital for an OD, or because they got an abscess, or some other problem. The legality just doesn't matter at all. From my side the cost that we are ALREADY playing would go down, because the drugs would be cleaner, and regulated, and users would be more educated about them.

but legalization of drugs also would have potentially negative effects. FOr instance, towns that legalize gambling often find that their crime rate goes up, as problem gamblers will often turn to crime to support their gambling addictions.

All freedom and liberty comes with consequence. And I am sure that the huge reduction in violent crime linked to the drug trade would more than offset any increased crime due to the legalization of drugs. Plus LEO would have a VAST amount of resources and money freed up to focus mainly on violent crime.

Not to mention the fact that places that legalize gambling draw people to an area specifically for that purpose, concentrating problem people. If we legalized drugs nationwide that wouldn't happen because what would be the point?

Some would then say the health problems caused by doing drugs (and there is no doubt some illegal drugs are harmful to your health) causes you to become a burden on society and therefor your acts are affecting others. Therefor, it is not only you that your act is affecting, but society at large.

Should others have to pay for the health problems caused by drug users?
No.

Not saying I hold this position, just that it is a valid position to hold.

Exact same argument can be made for eating french fries. Heart disease is the leading cause of death and the most expensive healthcare issue in the US. Using the above argument French fries should be far more illegal than meth.

Come on, life's not that simple... as if those were the only two choices. You guys have really convinced yourself it's one or the other, huh?

I'll pick neither.

Ok.. if those aren't the only two choices.

Frame me up another one.

I bet you can't.

It's because it's that simple.

There are two choices with drugs or any activity that people are going to do regardless of it's legality.

Regulate it, or spin our wheels chasing a white rabbit that will never go away.

Does anyone here think the 'war on drugs' could ever be successful of stopping people from doing drugs in any significant fashion? The more illegal a drug is, the more valuable it is, and the more attractive it is to sell.
