For those familiar with Hawaii, what is Kapaa like?

Kapaa will generally see alot of rain. The southern side of Kauai will definitely have more sunshine. Kauai is a nice place to relax--not much night life though.

I prefer Maui myself, a happy balance between tranquility and civilization. There's always something to do, yet you can still get away from the crowds. For a reasonably priced vacation spot check out the Royal Lahaina--but do not stay in either of the main hotel buildings (they suck), the oceanfront cottages are the place to stay there.

Have fun!

Thanks so much for the info, Corn... how is the nightlife in Kapaa? The oceanfront cottages sound amazing, but are they affordable? Our budget is about $650/person for the whole trip, airfare from LAX and 5 nights.

You should really do some reading up on the various islands, because most dont have nightlifes. If you want to party and all that, go to Oahu, but then I must ask why you came to Hawaii to do what you did at home? 😕

Where does your brother live? Kauai is a long swim from Oahu.

Not mine, his. He was recently stationed on one of the islands (army doctor), and we're waiting to hear back on which island he's on (very busy, e-mailed him yesterday). Are flights between islands pretty cheap?

NO! They are actually horribly priced, I refuse to do any island hopping because of the terrible prices on the 20 minute flights. It is cheaper for me to fly from Detroit to Chicago(50 minutes) than it is from Kona, Big Island, to Kahuli, Maui(25 minutes).

EDIT: If he is in the Army, he is most likely on Oahu, since that is the only army base in Hawaii.

I wonder why they're so expensive?! Good girief. Thanks for the tip, Oahu it will probably be.

Interisland flights are exepnsive now, I pay about $200 round trip, and for the first time in 8 years Hawaiian would not let me on an earlier flight w/o paying extra, I think I will start flying Aloha now. If you do go to Oahu that sounds more like what you wanted, plus if you look you could probably find a better deal, but a cottage on the beach might be a bit hard.
